As the best-preserved temple at the site, it’s the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation. We continue our journey on foot and creep through a jungle path to the North ancient library pool where we will wait for the Sun Rise. Listen to the explanations of your expert guide, then spend time venturing into the central chambers of the temple, where your local guide will reveal the history, myths and stories depicted on the stone bas-reliefs (the longest stretch of bas-reliefs carvings in the world) then you will venture deep into the central chambers of this truly great temple. Your knowledgeable guide will ensure that your visit to Angkor Wat leaves you with a rich understanding of the history and purpose of the great temple, and also of the mighty Angkorian civilisation.
Angkor Thom South Gate
The South Gate is one of the five gates of Angkor Thom (the Ancient Capital City of the Khmer Empire). The gate flanked by a row of 54 stone figures on each side was the entrance to the fortified city of Angkor Thom. At the height of its greatness, Angkor Thom had a population of more than one million people and was larger in size than the city of London. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Angkor Wat area.

We hired a tuk tuk for the day which was very cheap, with the driver speaking good English. Took us the short circuit first day so we booked him again for the long circuit the day after. Sokly took us everywhere we wanted to go but after a while we let him suggest places after understanding he used to take the local school tours to the temples. He even took us around Siem Reap to taste local cuisine away from the tourist eateries. If you go to Siem Reap make sure you purchase your tickets/ pass from the official ticket office, regardless of what is advertised online. It's the only place for Angkor pass. Don't be fooled by other offers. If you want to go with Sokly Eng his email address is [email protected] Really enjoyed this fabulous experience and the warm friendly Cambodian people.

This tour had been on my bucket list for a long time & it did not disappoint. Yes, I had to get up very early (about 5am) but it was certainly worth it to enjoy a sunrise over the amazing silhouette of Angkor Wat. Yes, there were other tourists there (of course, as you can't book the place just for you!) but it was still serene & lovely. Taking the tuk tuk out to the temple added to the sense of adventure & feeling of being 'Indiana Jones'. Our driver & guide met us at the hotel & made the day very easy. Pat the guide was super friendly & had lots of great info to share with us & had a great sense of humour too. Our tuk tuk guide was able to take care of some of our gear, always had cold water available & did a great job getting us around to all the great spots. Pat also knew the best places for photos & we came away with amazing photos of sunrise & the temples in more detail, as the sun came up. A great day out & totally worth getting up early for.
