Bicaz Gorge - Hasmas Mountain National Park
In the morning take the road that slices through the Bicaz Gorges in order to cross from Transylvania to Bucovina. This road is among Romania's most staggering and spectacular. The gorge twists and turns steeply uphill for three miles, cutting through sheer 1,000-foot limestone cliffs on its journey through the mountains. *Tour Guide will make a photo stop.
Red Lake
The Red Lake is a natural storage dam lake and is situated at the foot of Hasmasu Mare Mountains, somewhere near the town Gheorgheni. It is the largest natural mountain lake in Romania, its name coming from the reddish alluvia (iron oxides and iron hydroxides) deposited in the lake by the Red Creek. During Ceausescu’s reign, these two wonders were compulsory tourist destinations for the ones who wanted to spend their vacations in the mountains. The lake seems dark and threatening, the stumps that come out of the water makes you think that a lacustrine civilization met their fate just a few years before you pass by. After lunch with a lake view take a walk around and maybe feed the ducklings on the lake. Enjoy your lunch at a little restaurant with a view of the lake and afterwards if you have some bread left you can feed the ducklings.
Manastirea Voronet
Among the most picturesque treasures of Romania are the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina (in northeastern Romania). Their painted exterior walls are decorated with elaborate 15th and 16th century frescoes featuring portraits of saints and prophets, scenes from the life of Jesus, images of angels and demons, and heaven and hell. In the afternoon visit the most famous of the painted monasteries: Voronet 'the Sistine Chapel of the East' (UNESCO). Voronet’s most stunning feature is a Last Judgment fresco painted – as at all the churches – on the exterior façade. The blue paint that has miraculously never faded is known throughout the world as ‘Voronet blue’.

With its picturesque countryside of small villages, rolling hills, pastures, and meadows full of wildflowers, Maramures epitomizes all that the rural lifestyle encompasses. Visitors to Maramures have a unique opportunity to step back in time and bear witness to simpler times and simpler lives. Maramures is a small and unique location in the geographical heartland of Europe that has carefully and distinctively preserved the culture, traditions and lifestyle of a medieval peasant past. The region stands as a testament to traditional; to a romantic era of simplicity, pride and moral values that many of us can only now read about or hear from our grandparents. Little has changed in the centuries gone by. Families remain in the same villages as their ancestors. Traditional skills and crafts are passed down from generation to generation. Traditional hand-woven clothing continues to be practical. The church continues to be the soul of the village. Neighbors know one another and continue to lend a helping hand. Life in Maramures is like a mystery. Visitors to Maramures drive through mountain passes and descend into the valleys of life where the mystery of rural traditions unfolds before their eyes.

Mocanita Steam Train Ride - For a one-of-a-kind experience, take the narrow-gauge steam train. Starting from the small logging town of Viseu de Sus, the steam railway runs along a scenic road for about 30 miles, chugging behind an old steam engine. The train provides the only access - other than walking - to settlements higher up in the valley. During stops, you can watch workers load firewood and take on water from clear mountain streams. On the trip back down in the evening, the engine driver whistles for brakemen to stop the train - sometimes to pick up or drop off passengers, sometimes to stop to pick wild mountain mushrooms.
Merry Cemetery
The spiritual philosophy of the people of Maramures is perhaps nowhere more apparent than in Sapanta. The town folks’ ancestors considered death as a beginning, not the end, and this faith is reflected in the carvings in the town’s uniqueMerry Cemetery . Blue wooden crosses feature a carved scene and humorous verses that endeavor to capture essential elements - both the good and the imperfections - of the deceased’s life. Even without benefit of translation, visitors can appreciate the handiwork of sculptor Stan Ion Patras, who began carving these epitaphs in 1935, and his successors. Patras’ house in the village is now a fascinating museum. Sapanta is also home to several wooden gates and one of the region’s tallest wooden churches.
Sapanta-Peri Monastery
This site features one of the most representative churches for Maramures - the tallest wooden church in the world. Located next to Sapanta Village, within a dendrology park this monastic settlement dates from the 14th century. Currently the monastery hosts eight nuns and it is included in the UNESCO Patrimony.

We had a 10 day custom tour of Romania in June 2019, and from the first communication by email to the final drop off, everything was exceptional. Organising the tour by email with Diana was easy, and she was flexible with the arrangements, made thoughtful and sensible suggestions and was very considerate of our requirements. Our guide, Gabriel had an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Romania, from history and architecture to food and culture. He was a pleasure to travel with and we had some wonderful conversations. Unzip Romania is a small company who are flexible and can cater for individual needs, but has guides with many years experience who can make changes to the program as the need arises - in our case the weather prevented us from going on a planned hike, and another attraction was closed unexpectedly, so Gabriel gave us a number of options which provided us with some fabulous, unexpected experiences. This sort of experience in the field and willingness to make changes on the fly was much appreciated. We recommend Unzip Romania without hesitation.

Gabriel "Gabby" Florea was our tour guide for 7 days and took us on tour of: Bucharest - including Parliament Palace and the "Old Town" (we were sorry we missed the Village Museum - as it is highly recommended, but closed on the day we were there (closed Monday's in the winter fall/months)); Bucovina (Voronet Monastery); Painted Monasteries of Humor, Sucevita, Moldovita; Black Pottery Workshop; Painted Eggs Museum; Drove thru Bicaz Gorges (and then walked back thru); Red Lake; Sighisoara - Biertan Fortified Church; Transylvania -- Brasov; Libearty Bear Sanctuary; Rasnov Fortress; Peles Castle; Sinaia Monastery and Bran Castle (Castle of Dracula). We had no idea of what to expect in Romania and were very pleased with the tour and the country. Gabby went above and beyond on making sure we had a good time. The tour included everything we wanted to see in the time we had. My wife and I toured with another couple we are friends and we traveled in a 9 passenger van (4 more relatives of our friends joined the tour for 2 days) with Gabby driving and talking as we toured. He was a very safe/careful driver. He knew as much as anyone we have met about their country and its history (which was actually very interesting to learn). He was easy to understand and had a good sense of humor. The tour mixed the castles/monasteries with nature type things (which we liked as we can get "over castled" quickly). We laughed our way through Romania as we saw most of the highlights of Romania for the time we had to visit. He also took us to good restaurants and was able to get better seating locations than we would have and also able to get us in to some "restricted" areas of attractions. We ran into to other guides during the week that Gabby had trained or helped over the years. We would highly recommend Gabby for touring any parts of Romania.

We met our guide at Cluj Napoca airport as Diana suggested this was a better option for us coming from Budapest. From the moment we started, the trip was exceptionally well organised and thought out. We asked to stay in small local hotels with good locations and they were all exactly what we wanted- serving wonderful hearty breakfasts and also dinners if we wanted them. Each day was packed with more surprises and although the trip was very busy we never felt exhausted. Gabriel our guide was a wealth of information on the history and politics of Romania and he also gave us a fascinating insight into life in Romania both pre and post revolution. Prior to booking with Unzip I had asked two other companies for suggestions but the efficiency of the Unzip office and their ability to think "outside the box" regarding the itinerary, as well as their flexible approach to listening to what we wanted, encouraged me to book with them. We were not disappointed - we also enjoyed fantastic weather and the autumn colours in the forests added just one more "wow" factor.
