On 8 June 1856 a total of 194 people, descendants from the Bounty, arrived on Norfolk Island from Pitcairn Island aboard the Morayshire. The descendants arrived in cold, wet blustery conditions. Few had ever been to sea before; they were seasick, homesick and heartsick. The journey of 6,000 km (3,700 miles) took five weeks. They arrived to find a recently abandoned penal settlement set aside for the ‘worst of the worst’. It was full of ghosts and memories. 1856 - The Untold Story follows their journey in the World Heritage Listed Kingston area, recounting stories of the families, where they lived and how they adapted to their new life on Norfolk Island on this evocative tour.

This was a wonderful experience. Very fitting to the rather mournful theme which allowed reflection of how the Pitcairners lived and the difficulties they faced.

For a very relaxing and layback holiday, Norfolk Island is a good destination. The locals are very nice and accommodating.

The entire tour is conducted at night via one of the Baunti buses, with the subjects being lit up from floodlights on the bus. Many, many totally unknown facts about the early island (unknown to me anyway) are related on the tour, including the fact that some of the houses on Quality Row were burnt down in a protest against the NSW government in the early 1900's. This is a new, but well presented, most worthwhile tour. Lots to be learned from it.

Run by Baunti Escapes. A journey back in time. Climb around the tour bus in Burnt Pine settlement and travel down to Kingston where you will here the stories of arrival of the Pitcairn people on Norfolk Island in 1856 - their experiences, what happened when the arrived and the first few years of their lives in a new home. Norfolk Island is full of history and this gives an excellent insight in the beginnings of the current settlement - not to be missed if you are a history buff or what to understand the place of Norfolk Island in today's world and the shaping of the culture of Norfolk Island. Well worth the hour.
