Hawzen Vision Hotel
Abune Yemata Guh Church
On Day 1, you’ll start your adventure by flying from Addis Ababa to Mekele. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your guide and driver and begin the scenic drive to Hawzen, which takes about 2-3 hours depending on road conditions. After checking in at Hawzen Vision Hotel and freshening up, you’ll head to the base of Abune Yemata Guh, one of the most iconic rock-hewn churches in the region. The hike to Abune Yemata is moderately challenging, taking about 1-1.5 hours, and involves some steep and rocky sections. However, the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views and the chance to explore the church’s stunning frescoes. After your visit, you’ll return to Hawzen Vision Hotel for overnight stay, where you can relax and prepare for the next day’s activities.
Debre Mariam Korkor
Day 2 begins with breakfast at the hotel, followed by a drive to the base of Maryam Korkor, about 30-45 minutes from Hawzen. The hike to Maryam Korkor is moderately difficult and takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. This church is renowned for its impressive architecture and panoramic views of the Gheralta Mountains. After exploring Maryam Korkor, you’ll continue to the nearby Daniel Korkor, a smaller but equally fascinating rock-hewn church, which takes about 30-45 minutes to reach. Once you’ve finished exploring, you’ll descend and begin the drive back to Mekele, which takes around 2-3 hours. In Mekele, you’ll have lunch at a local restaurant before transferring to the airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa, concluding your memorable trip to the Gheralta Mountains.

First, the tour: Everything was awesome, it's an amazing place, one of the coolest places I've ever visited. Most importantly: The guy behind the tour, Kiros. When things go well, you might not notice the difference between a good and a bad operator. It's when things go wrong that you notice. We had a canceled flight for a different tour and, although it wasn't his job to do so, Kiros was the one who warned us about this. He was so amicable that it almost felt like we were friends rather than client and tour operator. Super bonus: My friend lost his passaport and had to come home, and if it wasn't for Kiros's assistance, he'd have had lost a bunch of money in flights that he wouldn't take. In sum: Amazing service!

If you are wandering which tour company to choose... wander no more. With Kiros you are in good hands, I can garantee you. This get will be the perfect partner for you. He is smart, understandable and really knows about tourism and our needs. We helped even what we were not doing a tour with him. He helped me rebook my flights. Trust me, you will thank me later. And of course, the tour in GhERALTA is SURREAL! Such amazing experience. Thank you so much!

We had an exceptional trip with Lucy Ethiopia Tours and highly recommend them to anyone visiting Ethiopia. Our journey started in the breathtaking Gheralta mountains, where we explored famous rock-hewn churches and enjoyed unforgettable views. We then continued to Axum, discovering the iconic obelisks, archaeological sites, and many other historical places across Tigray. The entire tour was perfectly organized. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and made every site come alive with history and culture. We felt safe, comfortable, and well taken care of at all times. Whether you’re visiting Ethiopia for its history, landscapes, or culture, Lucy Ethiopia Tours is an excellent choice for a memorable and authentic experience. Highly recommended!

This tour was amazing !!! Unforgettable memories from the Geralta mountains' breathtaking landscapes and people's warmth. The communities were so welcoming, and our guides helped creating a real link with all the people we met, by translating language and culture. We enjoy local food and drinks (I highly recommand local "suwa"). Our guides, led by Kiros, have a profound knowledge of history and local customs, and were highly attentive of everyone's wellness. All went so well that my only wish is to go back for a longer trek!!!
