What To Expect
During a two-hour Chinese calligraphy workshop in English, you will hear a brief overview of the history of Chinese calligraphy, listen to interesting stories behind great works of art, explore writing tools which have been used for a thousand years and create your own artwork in the same way as the ancients. 1. Chinese Calligraphy 101 Hear a brief overview of the history of Chinese calligraphy and get insight into how the Chinese view their art. 2. Tools & Skills Use the tools of Chinese calligraphy and learn basic writing techniques. 3. Warm up Practice your basic skills and prepare for your final work. 4. Final Work Create your own artwork: a traditional folding fan with your favorite Chinese character on it, and smile with pride!

5.00This class was the perfect introduction to calligraphy. The artist who led the workshop was so kind and so knowledgeable. I learned so much about the basics of calligraphy, as well as the history, and we got ample time to practice and create our own artwork. The studio was very cozy and comfortable. I could not recommend this class more... excellent value for the money and an absolute highlight of my trip to China.

5.00This was so much fun! If you're curious about calligraphy, I recommend it. You don't need any previous knowledge, as Lucy will explain everything during the session. The first part was an informative and very interesting introduction about the tools and history (you'll never look at calligraphy works the same way after this). During the second part, we practiced with the tools and created our own personalized work to bring home. It was amazing to see Lucy demonstrate the examples and exercises. She is skilled, knowledgeable, and patient, and we learned so much from her. She even had some delicious tea ready for us, which was such a thoughtful detail. Thank you, Lucy!

5.00I am glad we booked this calligraphy class early in our Shanghai trip! Our class was divided into two sessions. In the first session, Lucy, our amazing calligraphy expert, was able to give us a crash course on the history of chinese calligraphy. The second session involved using and practicing the calligraphy techniques. I would definitely recommend anyone who comes to Shanghai to try this experience.

5.00I had the loveliest time in this class!! Lucy was so amazing, she’s so knowledgable and genuine, it was truly such a great time. A great way to experience Shanghai in the context of art. The first half of the class is learning about some history on Chinese calligraphy, and the second half is learning how to write/paint. Lucy was a great instructor, and very patient with us novices 😂 She inspired me to go and get some brushes and ink to practice on my own. Would definitely recommend if you’re ever in Shanghai and want a different type of experience!

5.00Lucy was amazing. This session was the highlight of my trip to Shanghai. I made a fan with my 2 favorite Chinese symbols: love and prosperity. Lucy was patient kind and skilled. She’s an amazing calligrapher and her English is fluent and flawless. I had the best time with her!! I recommend this 5 star experience highly!!!

5.00Our calligraphy master class in Shanghai was a highlight of our trip. The session was incredibly interesting and well-structured. It began with an informative introduction to the art's history, which really helped us appreciate the craft. The practical part was both challenging and fun – getting to paint with the brushes was a hands-on experience we loved. We were also thrilled that we could keep our artwork as a souvenir. What made it truly special, however, was the personal touch. After the class, we had a lovely, heartfelt talk with the host and even exchanged small gifts. It felt like a genuine cultural exchange, not just a tourist activity. We enjoyed every minute and would definitely recommend this master class to anyone visiting Shanghai.

5.00Lucy is an amazingly proficient, knowledgeable, and friendly teacher and calligrapher. The workshop was even better than we had dared hoping for! Lucy has taken us through the history of Chinese writing styles and calligraphy with plenty of interesting stories. She also guided us through the process of creating our own piece of art and took all the time we needed for it. Lucy gave us the freedom to try other calligraphy styles. Besides that, she really took the time to answer all of our many questions. We highly recommend doing this workshop to enrich your China experience and bring your own artwork back home as a unique souvenir. Thank you Lucy for an amazing experience!
