With years of experience, she brought the castle to life, pointing out the most fascinating details, sharing stories we never would have known on our own, and answering every one of our questions with so much patience and enthusiasm. 5.00Himeji Castle is an extraordinary place, well worth the day trip. But the even more pleasant surprise was Ryuji, our guide. He was knowledgeable, thoughtful, funny, and patient, as we worked our way slowly through the castle and grounds. He wove a great tale, shedding light on the history of the place, and the nature of its design. He’s also knowledgeable about today’s Himeji, and he gave a great bakery recommendation as well! I can’t recommend Ryuji highly enough.

5.00Ryuji is a local who grew up near the castle (you can see his high school from the higher grounds of Himeji Castle) and gave us a knowledgeable tour of its history and provenance in Japan’s lore. His style is friendly and informal, so it was like being shown around by a friend. There were 4 of us and after, he helped two of us catch a cab by leading us to the taxi area and making sure the driver could take us to our next destination which was a town 40 minutes away and off the beaten path of most tourists. He then ran back to answer questions from our two remaining friends still at the castle.
