At Sumatra Orangutan Trekking, we organize unique and unforgettable jungle trekking eco tours that help preserve the Gunung Leuser National Park and its endangered orangutans. But we offer more than just traditional trekking experiences.

Our English-speaking guides are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia), and they enjoy sharing their knowledge with you while they help keep the Gunung Leuser National Park clean and safe for both humans and animals!

Our day tours and activities make a difference in the local community. When you purchase one of our trekking tours, 10% of the proceeds go to children in Bukit Lawang who can’t afford to go to school and single mothers who struggle financially. This money helps the children attend school and eventually find jobs that will allow them to support themselves and their families.

  • Very well organised Trek! Highly recommend!

We had a seamless experience from pick up to drop. The highlight of the trip was that we did manage to sight an orangutan all 3 days. We saw Thomas leaf monkeys, gibbons , macaques and other reptiles etc. The trek terrain was adventurous but there are many options depending on what the group is up to. Our guides Karan and Memet were very friendly and helpful. The cook Jacky was also great- he managed to give us a feast for both the dinners and some lovely fruits. Memet made sure we were entertained us well with songs, magic tricks and Karan made a nice bonfire and had collected some nice fragrant wood which made it even better! The tents and toilets were decent for being in the jungle. The river showers were so refreshing! The river taxi was fun and a great end to the trip.

  • Amazing 3day trek with the orangutans

This was an amazing experience, from the beginning till the very end. I was picked up from the airport, had a briefing upon my arrival in Bukit Lawang, and a simple but great accommodation with a balcony and hammock overlooking the river and the jungle. The trek itself was very well organised and medium difficulty (a lot of steep climbs and descents) Our guides were not only super chatty and funny, but also very knowledgeable. Food throughout the trip was awesome, and plentiful. We saw 3 different types of monkeys and 2 types of apes, plus lots of other animals (great argus, hornbills, chameleons, snakes, lizards, turtles). And got to see a different orangutan every day. Plus the tubing back was lots of fun. Overall, the trip was very reasonably priced, really well-organized and super enjoyable.

We did a 3-day, 2-night trek with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking and it was an absolutely amazing experience. We were lucky enough to see three orangutans in the wild, which was truly unforgettable. A big shoutout to our guides, Waka and Justin, who were fantastic. They were knowledgeable, attentive and genuinely caring, always making us feel safe and comfortable throughout the trek. Their deep respect of the wildlife stood out as they always made sure we kept a safe distance from the animals at all times and behaved responsibly around the animals. The food and accommodation in the jungle exceeded our expectations and the whole experience felt authentic and very well organized. Communication beforehand was also smooth and easy, with quick and helpful responses to all our questions. We highly recommend this experience with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking!🦧

I can not recommend this enough! We did the 3 Days 2 Nights trek and I would recommend going at leat one night but the more the better! (Also if you like snakes, Biologie or photography especially Makro go for the 3 hour night jungle Trek) Our guides were Waka and Mehmet and they are amazing persons, they know everything about the Jungle, will always make you feel safe and do everything so you can see lots of animals and have a great experience. They respect the nature very much and the Tour is 100% ethical, they don't leave any trash behind and don't touch the Wildlife, which was also important to us. We also met lots of the other guides and they are all the nicest peoples so you will have a great experience anyway! Also Dedek (the Admin you will text with) helps you with everything also besides the Trek like accommodations, food and every question you have, so you don't have to worry about anything. We are so happy to went with them and we will try to come back as soon as possible! Thank you for everything:)

  • 3D2N Jungle Trek - Story

began this story at Medan airport. I had been informed that a driver would meet me in the arrival hall, holding a sign with my name. However, upon my arrival, no one was there to greet me. I waited for half an hour before the driver finally showed up. The driver, whose name is Azli, turned out to be quite skilled, though his driving style was faster and riskier than what I am accustomed to. It seemed to reflect the typical driving culture in the area. Azli was friendly and had a habit of playing music loudly while driving. He didn’t ask whether we were comfortable with the music or if I preferred silence, but somehow, I appreciated this straightforward and unpretentious approach. Out of ordinary! It wasn’t about being disrespectful or unfriendly—it was simply the way things were. There was a certain charm in this uncomplicated way of life, a raw and honest simplicity that I found refreshing. We arrived at a spot where all travelers seemed to gather. I was taken to the reception on a motorbike, riding along scenic rivers lined with shops and hotels—a clear tourist hub. I was welcomed with a drink and waited for another traveler to join for a quick briefing. The briefing was short and mostly repeated information easily found online but still helpful. My hotel room was at the top of a wooden house with a stunning forest view. A group of monkeys kept jumping and moving around on the zinc roof—noisy but kind of charming. Thankfully, they slept at night like we do. There was no water supply that rainy evening, but the cool weather made it comfortable. I dined at a restaurant owned by Explore; the food was decent, and I enjoyed eating while admiring the forest view. At night, locals could be seen catching fish with just a torch and their bare hands. They said the light calms the fish, making it easier to catch them. It was fascinating to watch. The next morning, we gathered at 8 AM, and breakfast was served at the same restaurant. I chose an omelet with tomatoes and cheese—it was delicious. However, almost everyone complained about the coffee, a local brew called Kopi Bubuk, which was unfiltered and quite harsh. Though unpleasant at first, I drank it daily and, by the last day, grew accustomed to its unique taste—it felt like it truly belonged there. We stored some belongings in the storerooms and brought only the essentials for our 3-day, 2-night jungle adventure. Dea, a friendly and helpful girl, managed the storage and even helped me resolve a lodging issue. She truly made things easier for us. Our tour guides, Henri and Ansho, worked as a team, though Ansho stood out with his sharp animal-spotting skills and deep forest experience. Henri, fluent in English, shared fascinating stories about the jungle, making the experience even more enjoyable. The trek was tougher than I expected, with many steep climbs, so be prepared. We spotted three semi-wild orangutans—calm, charming, and unbothered by humans—as well as Thomas leaf monkeys and flying hornbills. Though the trek was challenging, the fruit break was refreshing, and the simple lunch tasted great after all the effort, though it could have been served a bit better. Overall, it was a rewarding adventure! The campsite was right by the river, perfect for resting after trekking. However, the beds were too short for taller travelers, making the first night a bit uncomfortable due to the loud sound of water rushing over stones. Despite this, we loved swimming and bonded as a group of six from different places, sharing laughs and great conversations. Playing cards was fun too, though Pawel's game felt endless—but we still enjoyed it! In conclusion, this tour is highly recommended, especially for those who wish to experience a genuine jungle environment and observe orangutans in their natural habitat. Here is some advice for the agent: Consider supplying a longer sleeping mat, as the provided beds might be too short for some. Pay closer attention to the setup of the campfire to ensure it is more enjoyable. While we understand the need for guides to earn a living, mentioning tipping multiple times can feel a bit uncomfortable. Tourists will likely offer what they feel is appropriate based on their experience. I recommend this travel agent! I almost forgot to mention—Ronny is the chef throughout the tour, and his cooking is exceptional! Highly recommended!

We did the 3 day 2 night trekking and it was amazing. It was not peak season, so we got the opportunity to do the trekking alone with two guides. Waka and Alvi were the best! We felt safe and informed during the whole trip and outside the trekking the admin team were really helpfull aswell. Seeing many of the monkeys and birds was a big plus ofcourse! Definetly recomend!
