At Sumatra Orangutan Trekking, we organize unique and unforgettable jungle trekking eco tours that help preserve the Gunung Leuser National Park and its endangered orangutans. But we offer more than just traditional trekking experiences.

Our English-speaking guides are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia), and they enjoy sharing their knowledge with you while they help keep the Gunung Leuser National Park clean and safe for both humans and animals!

Our day tours and activities make a difference in the local community. When you purchase one of our trekking tours, 10% of the proceeds go to children in Bukit Lawang who can’t afford to go to school and single mothers who struggle financially. This money helps the children attend school and eventually find jobs that will allow them to support themselves and their families.

My friend and I just finished our 3 day 2 night trekking in Bukit Lawang and we are so sad that its over!! It is in top 3 experiences ever! We saw lots of orangutans and other monkeys every day. The company gives great advice and takes care of everything you could wish for. We got the most friendly guides, Waka and Rizky. They were incredibly sweet and welcoming and made us feel safe. I highly recommend choosing this company for your own orangutan trekking!!

We were there as a family (47, 47, 13, 11) and had the "3-day exclusive eco jungle package" booked with Dedek. Communication was fast, friendly and reliable from the start, first via email, then via WhatsApp. The deposit and payment we have processed via PayPal, all very straightforward and secure. The driver Herman picked us up from the airport and took us confidently through the city traffic and the rugged country roads. In the almost new and comfortable car, fresh fruit and water was waiting for us to strengthen and in between toilet stops were offered. Herman was always very focused, quiet and nice. The guides for the next day, Brem and Mehmet have welcomed us and although we arrived at the Ecolodge after kitchen time we were prepared another meal and discussed organizational issues. The next morning we went on mopeds to the headquarters in 5 minutes to collect permits for the national park. On foot through the village and a suspension bridge past our guesthouse we then set off into the jungle. Brem and Mehmet gave us safety advice, their English is good to very good and they are both absolutely likeable, helpful and competent. We asked for moderate hiking trails away from people and lots of breaks and that's how it was done. The guides let each other know when an orangutan has been spotted and so after about 1 hour we could see an orange arm dangling from a nest. There were many groups there and our guides suggested eating something off the beaten track, as it might still take time for the great ape to join us. Said done and we were almost done when the animal went foraging. Apparently, someone had lured her under her nest with a carrot. Many others had already moved on, they had to reach their camping sites in time. So we went back to the nest and there the lady and her 1-2 week old baby came down the tree. All the guides made sure that no one got too close to her and that she could walk her way freely. She was quite unimpressed, however, and went forward undeterred and slowly. Namely, our break place. Mehmet still sprinted off to "save" the food (it was just fruit) and the backpacks. Half a watermelon remained and she grabbed it and slowly disappeared back into the trees. We were all impressed and touched by this encounter. We went further and saw a snake, all the other monkeys, giant ants, turtles and butterflies. Mehmet and Brem always paid attention to us and took many breaks, everything was very relaxed. We got leaf crowns and fans made of leaves from Brem and the children even walking sticks made of dead wood. The end point was the river, where we took an extensive bathing break. Mehmet and Brem were very relaxed and made us and our children splash forever. There was also Nasi Goreng with chicken and pineapple for dessert, which all tasted very delicious! Afterwards we went up the river for a few minutes where our inflatable boat captain was waiting for us. Everything was packed waterproof and off we went. Sometimes there are rapids, but not really dangerous (you could have worn life jackets, everything was thought of!). Another highlight was that due to the holiday many tourists from Medan and locals celebrated, bathed and sang in the villages on the river and we in the middle of it, it was a great and loving atmosphere, we felt very comfortable. Right in front of the Ecolodge we got off and after a short dinner fell into bed happy and tired. The Ecolodge (room category orangutan) was very clean and functional. Locking down the bathroom inside and out because of the monkeys. All very basic and natural, there is no air conditioning, but fans and mosquito nets (although we haven't seen any). Breakfast was very good and fresh, the bamboo restaurant building really worth seeing! All staff very friendly and helpful. We are just very scared at night because sometimes the macaques jump on the corrugated iron roof and that makes a terrible noise. The next day Herman went back to Medan and there to Maison Tjong a Fie, the home of a Chinese landowner who made his fortune with palm oil. Because of the old furniture and equipment very nice to look at and you can imagine what it was like then. The English-speaking guide has done that very nicely, too. After lunch there was 90 minutes of massage (separated by curtains) for each of us, very professional and absolutely relaxing after all the hiking and driving. Herman still took us to the airport, always looking for safety and punctuality. We can recommend Sumatra Orangutan Trekking to Dedek and his team without exception and thank you very much!

  • An amazing experience

I did a 3-day jungle trekking experience with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking, and it was honestly one of the most incredible experiences of my life. From the very beginning, everything was very well organized, and our tour guides truly made the experience unforgettable. They were not only friendly and fun, but also incredibly knowledgeable about the jungle and its wildlife. We always felt safe and well taken care of. Over the three days, we were lucky enough to see an amazing variety of animals. Of course, the highlight was seeing the orangutans, but we also saw long tail monkeys, pig tail monkeys, white and black gibbons, and even Thomas leaf monkeys. It felt surreal to be so close to these animals, completely free in the wild. The jungle experience itself is quite intense, but so rewarding. The landscapes, the sounds of nature, and the overall feeling of being disconnected from everything else is something I’ll never forget. I would 100% recommend this experience to anyone visiting Sumatra. It’s a perfect mix of adventure, nature, and unforgettable memories.

  • Absolutely fantastic trip with really good customer service!

We had three fantastic days in the jungle with Sumatra orangutan trekking. We saw orangutans and many different monkeys. We wrote to them and heard about the options for a trip, as well as transportation and accommodation. They were really helpful with all three parts and helped arrange it, which went very easily and quickly. When our flight to Medan was 12 hours late, they were quick to help change transportation, accommodation and we got rushed the trekking trip to a day later. They answered us immediately, at any time of the day, and they quickly got everything to succeed, really good customer service. In general, they were really quick and helpful with the questions we had before arrival. The whole tour was completed with good guides who had broad knowledge and were good at checking out if we were okay. In addition, there was good mood and joy throughout the trip. There was really good food and massages delicious fruit. Great experience and a clear recommendation!

  • Very well organised Trek! Highly recommend!

We had a seamless experience from pick up to drop. The highlight of the trip was that we did manage to sight an orangutan all 3 days. We saw Thomas leaf monkeys, gibbons , macaques and other reptiles etc. The trek terrain was adventurous but there are many options depending on what the group is up to. Our guides Karan and Memet were very friendly and helpful. The cook Jacky was also great- he managed to give us a feast for both the dinners and some lovely fruits. Memet made sure we were entertained us well with songs, magic tricks and Karan made a nice bonfire and had collected some nice fragrant wood which made it even better! The tents and toilets were decent for being in the jungle. The river showers were so refreshing! The river taxi was fun and a great end to the trip.

  • Amazing 3day trek with the orangutans

This was an amazing experience, from the beginning till the very end. I was picked up from the airport, had a briefing upon my arrival in Bukit Lawang, and a simple but great accommodation with a balcony and hammock overlooking the river and the jungle. The trek itself was very well organised and medium difficulty (a lot of steep climbs and descents) Our guides were not only super chatty and funny, but also very knowledgeable. Food throughout the trip was awesome, and plentiful. We saw 3 different types of monkeys and 2 types of apes, plus lots of other animals (great argus, hornbills, chameleons, snakes, lizards, turtles). And got to see a different orangutan every day. Plus the tubing back was lots of fun. Overall, the trip was very reasonably priced, really well-organized and super enjoyable.

We did a 3-day, 2-night trek with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking and it was an absolutely amazing experience. We were lucky enough to see three orangutans in the wild, which was truly unforgettable. A big shoutout to our guides, Waka and Justin, who were fantastic. They were knowledgeable, attentive and genuinely caring, always making us feel safe and comfortable throughout the trek. Their deep respect of the wildlife stood out as they always made sure we kept a safe distance from the animals at all times and behaved responsibly around the animals. The food and accommodation in the jungle exceeded our expectations and the whole experience felt authentic and very well organized. Communication beforehand was also smooth and easy, with quick and helpful responses to all our questions. We highly recommend this experience with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking!🦧
