At Sumatra Orangutan Trekking, we organize unique and unforgettable jungle trekking eco tours that help preserve the Gunung Leuser National Park and its endangered orangutans. But we offer more than just traditional trekking experiences.
Our English-speaking guides are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia), and they enjoy sharing their knowledge with you while they help keep the Gunung Leuser National Park clean and safe for both humans and animals!
Our day tours and activities make a difference in the local community. When you purchase one of our trekking tours, 10% of the proceeds go to children in Bukit Lawang who can’t afford to go to school and single mothers who struggle financially. This money helps the children attend school and eventually find jobs that will allow them to support themselves and their families.

What To Expect
If you’re up for a jungle adventure, we offer this 3 day jungle trekking, that takes you deeper into the Gunung Leuser National Park, where you can enjoy its unique plants and animals. On this trek, you’ll spend two nights at different campsites in the jungle. Your trekking will end by tubing down the river in our “jungle taxi” back to your hotel. For this trip, you should be physically fit.

5.00We did the 3 day 2 night trekking and it was amazing. It was not peak season, so we got the opportunity to do the trekking alone with two guides. Waka and Alvi were the best! We felt safe and informed during the whole trip and outside the trekking the admin team were really helpfull aswell. Seeing many of the monkeys and birds was a big plus ofcourse! Definetly recomend!

5.00We did a 3D2N trek with this organization with my girlfriend. Before the trek everything went smoothly, they helped us with everyhting we needed. We decided to take the public bus to bukit lawang and they came to pick us up from the bus station which was very nice. During the trip we saw different types of monkeys and a couple orangutans. Also a hornbill couple came very close to us. Food was very good throughout the trip and there was always more than enough. Nasir and Justin took very good care of us and kept us entertained. Nasir is a very knowledgeable 1st guide and told us many things about the animals and plants. Also his magic tricks were on point. Justin was a fun and helpful 2nd guide and a very good singer. :) Overall satisfied with the trip and also worth mentioning that we did the trip in february and we didn't encounter any rain during our trekking. Only during the late evening and night but still the trails were in rather good condition in the morning. So the only thing that got us wet was our own sweat.

5.00What an amazing experience! We did the 2 night trek which was perfect for us. This company is brilliant. Dedek answered all our queries very efficiently. The booking process is easy. Once on the trek Karem and the team took brilliant care of us. We are a bit older than the average jungle trekker but felt very safe in their hands. Also very knowledgeable and such fun to be with. Cant recommend him enough.

5.00Our 3-day orangutan trek in the jungle of Bukit Lawang in Gunung Leuser National Park was one of the most intense and impressive experiences of our entire trip. First things first: This trekking is not a walk. It is physically extremely demanding – steep ascents and descents, slippery passages, high humidity and constant heat. You sweat continuously and often move climbing and balancing rather than walking through the jungle. That's what makes it so authentic and special. Nature is overwhelming. We have seen an incredible number of animals in the wild, including gibbons, Thomas langurs, macaques, a green Sumatra viper and many more. Everything without fences, without artificial staging – just real jungle. The absolute highlight was the encounter with a wild orangutan on the last day. After three days of hope, effort and patience, we suddenly sat very close to him and could watch him for a long time. Watching him move freely through the trees and even build shelter from the rain from leaves was an indescribable moment and more than made up for any effort. A huge thank you goes to our guides Iril and Ipol who guided us safely, professionally and with a lot of humor through the jungle. You could always tell how much experience they had and how much they respected this place. They went to incredible lengths to show us animals, get us safely through difficult passages and make the experience unforgettable. Even our chef Suki was just incredible. It’s hard to believe what he has prepared in the middle of the jungle – fresh, varied and extremely delicious food every day. Plus his positive nature, his good mood and even little magic tricks in the evening – he made camp life very special. and mentally demanding, but rewarded with unique moments. With guides like Iril and Ipol and Chef Suki, this experience became even more special.

5.00I had a great time trekking with my guide Amri and his assistant Eza. Both of the were very friendly. We saw not only a couple orangutans but also Thomas leaf and siamang monkeys, pig tail and long tail macaques, white handed gibbons and the pavo real. The food was really good, especially the dinners were delicious. They also helped me organise my transfer from the airport and to my next destination, as well as accommodation in Bukit Lawang, which was very handy. Two suggestions: 1) being quite tall, I struggled with the mosquito net, maybe there’s way to make it a bit wider, and my pillow was very humid the first night; 2) I personally would prefer traditional rice based breakfast rather than the pancakes on the last day.
10/10 Experience!

5.00I did the 3 days / 2 nights jungle trekking with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking and it was honestly one of the best experiences ever! We went deep into the jungle to see orangutans, and it was soooo amazing. We saw several orangutans and many other monkeys and wildlife along the way. Being in the middle of the jungle like that felt really special and adventurous. Our guides, Memet and Inu, were absolutely fantastic. They were funny, kind, caring, and made the whole trip even more enjoyable. They made us feel safe and took great care of us the entire time. And the food was delicious! Indra cooked the most delicious meals for us in the jungle. I couldn’t believe how good the food was out there. Everything was perfectly organized from start to finish. I would 100% recommend this trekking to anyone visiting Sumatra. Such an unforgettable experience! 🌿🐒

It was so much more than just a trek — it was a complete immersion into the wild nature of Sumatra, surrounded by rainforest sounds and unforgettable close encounters with orangutans in their natural habitat. From the very beginning, we felt we were in excellent hands thanks to our two guides, Memet and Inu. They were professional, knowledgeable, and always attentive to our safety, but also incredibly friendly and passionate about their work. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and they created a truly special group atmosphere. They shared fascinating insights about the plants, wildlife, and local culture, making every moment engaging and meaningful. The trekking days were challenging but perfectly organized, with breaks at stunning viewpoints and nights spent camping deep in the jungle, lulled to sleep by the sounds of the forest. It was an authentic experience, far away from everything. A special mention goes to the food — absolutely incredible! Indra, our cook, took care of us from start to finish with fresh, generous, and varied meals. We never expected such high-quality food in the middle of the jungle! 5.00Our 3-day jungle trek was truly an unforgettable experience. We were incredibly lucky to see so many orangutans in their natural habitat, which was absolutely magical. Besides the orangutans, we also spotted several other monkeys and a snake. The guides memet, Indra and inu were extremely kind, friendly, and caring. They made us feel safe and comfortable the entire time and shared so much knowledge about the jungle and the wildlife. The food was honestly super, super delicious. We were amazed by the variety and quality of the meals. We also ate a lot of fresh fruit, which was refreshing and perfect during the trek. Sleeping in the jungle was such a special experience. Falling asleep to the sounds of nature and waking up surrounded by the rainforest was something we will never forget. The team took very good care of us and made sure we were comfortable throughout the entire trip. We highly recommend this jungle trek to anyone who loves nature and adventure. It was an incredible and well-organized experience that we will cherish forever.

5.00Unforgettable experience, with Fabian and Tesen, great guides who took care of us like never before. Even in the middle of the jungle, the meals were delicious, the hospitality extraordinary and the exchanges rewarding. I recommend everything, we had the chance to see orangutans, Thomas, Gibbons and other animals of all kinds. But the most impressive thing is the kindness and listening of the guides who transmit to us the love for the jungle. Experience of a life I will never forget! Terymakasi, Bagus Bagus!

5.00Me and my partner have just finished the 3 day tour. From start to finish the service and communication we received was excellent, the best communication we’ve experienced on our travels. Our guides Brema and Alvi were fantastic and a joy to be around. They made sure that we had to best time possible and went the extra mile on multiple occasions for us when we were not expecting it. We saw more orangutan and wildlife than we were expecting, I would definitely recommend doing this tour if you’re unsure.
