At Sumatra Orangutan Trekking, we organize unique and unforgettable jungle trekking eco tours that help preserve the Gunung Leuser National Park and its endangered orangutans. But we offer more than just traditional trekking experiences.

Our English-speaking guides are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia), and they enjoy sharing their knowledge with you while they help keep the Gunung Leuser National Park clean and safe for both humans and animals!

Our day tours and activities make a difference in the local community. When you purchase one of our trekking tours, 10% of the proceeds go to children in Bukit Lawang who can’t afford to go to school and single mothers who struggle financially. This money helps the children attend school and eventually find jobs that will allow them to support themselves and their families.

What To Expect

If you’re up for a jungle adventure, we offer this 3 day jungle trekking, that takes you deeper into the Gunung Leuser National Park, where you can enjoy its unique plants and animals. On this trek, you’ll spend two nights at different campsites in the jungle. Your trekking will end by tubing down the river in our “jungle taxi” back to your hotel. For this trip, you should be physically fit.

We wish we could give 5 stars, as the trek itself and Brem were amazing, but unfortunately our experience ended on a disappointing note. The 3-day jungle trek was wonderful — Brem was very attentive and knowledgeable, the food was delicious, and the camps were comfortable (for the jungle, of course!). We also saw many different animals thanks to Brem, who always knew the right paths to take. Sadly, when we got our bags back, we found they had been tampered with — some items were misplaced, the bag wasn’t closed the way we had left it, and 400,000 IDR was missing. The bags are stored above the restaurant, not in locked storage, and we never received any follow-up after reporting the issue. We don’t want to harm the company, as they offer great treks, but we hope sharing this helps prevent it from happening again. Keep your valuables with you during the trek, even if you can only take a small bag. It was disappointing to have such a wonderful experience end on a sour note.

It was amazing !! Waka is so good and made our experience amazing. He made us feel very safe, knew everything about the jungle and was so fun to hang around will definitely be recommending waka as a guide to anyone. Riske was a great jungle boy and our chef pudra also made amazing food. Highly recommend the 4 day trek to anyone. Only downside was we did not see a tiger but I am not sure I wanted to anyway

My boyfriend and I had the most amazing time with Nasir, Raffi and the team during our 3 day trek. We saw three orangutans on day one and four on day two, including two mums and their babies!! The second mum and baby we saw were literally waiting for us at our second campsite so we were really close to them. The food at camp also absolutely surpassed our expectations - Sugi, our chef, did an incredible job. From start to finish we had a magical few days ticking off a bucket list experience for both of us and would absolutely recommend doing the trek with this amazing team.

My girlfriend and I did the three day trek with Nasir and Raffi. We saw orangutans within a couple of hours and ended up with a mum and baby swinging through our camp on day 2. The trekking had some sweaty climbs but the guides kept the mood fun the whole time with stories, jokes, and a bit of Halloween jungle magic that I still can’t explain. They also pointed out loads of plants, insects and sounds in the jungle and explained what everything was used for which was really interesting. Sugi (Jungle Momma) cooked unreal meals for lunch and dinner every day. No idea how he does it. After the trek we went to see them back in the village and ended up sat around playing guitar and singing with the whole team. It didn’t feel like a tour at all. It felt like hanging out with friends who happened to know the jungle better than anyone. I won’t be able to properly explain how good these guys are or how much effort goes in to making it a good experience. I’ll be telling everyone I know who visits Sumatra to book with them.

The tour was great and we can fully recommend it. The guides were very competent and could tell us a lot about the jungle. Through them, we were able to find all the monkeys living on Sumatra. In the forest, you sleep in simple huts under mosquito nets. On the whole tour we never felt unsafe. The food was also extremely good. Both the lunch in the woods and the buffet in the evening was very delicious and always enough. A certain basic condition is necessary, as it goes up and down quite steeply all the time. We also booked a private shuttle to and from Medan Airport through the organizer. This was also very well organized and worked without any problems. The night before the tour we stayed in one of the accommodations of the organizer. This was very basic, but perfectly sufficient for that night and clean.

My experience during the 3 days, 2 nights tour was incredible! I went during low and supposedly rainy season, which ended up being the best decision. We only had one night with some light rain and the less tourists allowed us to see more during our trek. Syapuil and Roji were also the best guides I've had in any trekking or hiking experience! They were respectful, detailed, kind, and extremely fun to be around. They both were extremely attentive during the trek and spotted countless wild monkeys, insects, birds, and other things that I would've walked right past. The guides were also extremely receptive and intuitive when dealing with our tour group; they knew when to give us space and enjoy the jungle on our own, but also created an extremely social and warm environment with plenty of adventurous sightseeing. 10/10 would reccomend!

We had a fantastic 3 days trekking with an really expirienced team. Our guide named Waka, and bodyguard Irreal (I hope i write his name well😅) saw the animals so quickly and helped us to get the best view of the animals. After the trekking in the evening, we did a lot of funny games with the team! The food they made was really great, they have snacks and really healthy food. The communication via WhatsApp was really good, the team responded very fast and they helped us with everything: transfer, accomodation, just everything😊 So book the tour with this amazing company!!😄😄

I did a fantastic jungle trek in Bukit Lawang. Kiran and Justin were really the best guides I could wish for, enthusiastic, funny and full of knowledge about the jungle. Thanks to them, I got to see a lot of monkeys and even orangutans up close. Jackie provided delicious meals every day; after a day of walking, that tasted extra good. The routes were beautiful, the Mood was super cozy and we sang a lot along the way. I loved every minute of it immensely. An unforgettable experience that I can warmly recommend to everyone.

A totally fantastic experience to be in the jungle with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking. Professional guides who could make fun and fun at the same time. Really a huge experience, where we saw ten orangutans on our trip! And the food was also a 10/10

Great experience with Saito, Eja and chef Egi! Saw a lot of animals and we were taken care of brilliantly. Food was great as well! Would definately recommend!
