A breathtaking sunrise over Uluru, followed by a hike through a sacred place with striking contrasts. A night in the desert, with campfire, starry skies, and wild horses. A unique, simple, and unforgettable experience.

This trip worked for us as we had based ourselves in Alice and wanted to combine visiting Uluru with a proper outback experience and this trip fulfilled exactly that and did not disappoint. A trip full of highlights, including The Uluru base walk, Sunset over Uluru, Sunrise over Kata Tjutu, Valley of the winds walk and probably the best experience for us was walking the Kings Canyon rim. We even had a blow out on a dirt track road section and had to chip in with the tyre change in the middle of nowhere for that full outback experience. The trip is well scheduled and although it covers some distances, there are several planned stops at various roadhouses and Damian’s commentary kept us entertained and informed along the route. This, however, is not a trip for those that need their creature comforts or restaurant level food, as the camp sites and facilities are basic at best and the food is camp site tucker. And be prepared to all chip in at mealtime for the preparation and clearing up after. We are not really campers and thought the swag would be a step too far for us, so went for the tent option and hired sleeping bags and we were actually pleasantly surprised how comfortable the permanent canvas structures (rather than an actual tent) with their metal bed frames and mattresses, were. Blankets were provided, as it can go below zero at night during August, and with these and the sleeping bags we were fairly snug at night. The 5.00am wake up times are a rude shock but necessary for the Kata Tjutu sunrise and King Canyon walks. And the log fired shower at the Kings Canyon campsite is something we will remember for a long time. It is recommended in the list of things you need, but along with a decent pair of walking shoes and your water bottles, a torch is pretty much essential as, boy is it wonderfully dark in the outback at night. Our son had bought us a couple of the modern led head torches for this trip, and we got full use out of them. You are also advised to bring a power pack for your phone, but in reality the outback bus had a couple of charging points and we were pleasantly surprised to find that the campsite kitchen also had a power unit with several USB charging points, but probably best to be on the safe side and bring a power pack if you have one. The walks included are generally fairly manageable, with the possible exception of the Kings Canyon rim walk. The Uluru base walk is flat, therefore easy. The Valley of the Winds is actually officially a grade 4 walk, but apart from a couple of small sections, is fairly comfortable throughout. But the Kings Canyon Rim Walk, which is also technically a grade 4, is where you do need a decent level of fitness and definitely knee mobility, as it has a lung busting start and the rest of the four hours of undulations give the knees a good work out. We are now well into our seventh decade on this planet and after managing the initial climb found the rest fairly comfortable as long as you take your time, as Damien did as he guided us round. There are alternative walks along the base of the canyon for those who would find the rim walk too challenging. We had originally decided on the three-day tour, as we were basing ourselves in Alice for a while and were doing the east and west McDowell ranges separately. But we did not realise until the last day that we were actually on the four-day tour that then went off into the West McDowell ranges. But as the campsite in the ranges was allegedly more remote and basic than the previous two, we were not too disappointed when dropped off at Orminston Gorge for our connection back to Alice, as we were ready for a proper shower and hotel bed by then. And as a final footnote, we arranged this trip well in advance remotely from the UK and having several questions we found the email communication and speed of responses from the Autopia team superb.

I had an absolutely incredible time on this tour of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon. Sid was a fantastic tour guide, with a wealth of knowledge to share about local aboriginal culture and tradition. He made sure that we got to experience the sights in the best way, helping us avoid the crowds of the other tours and ensuring our experience was unique and special. Highlights of the trip were sleeping in a swag under the stars, experiencing Uluru glow under the sunset, and the morning hike through Kata Tjuta. I wish that this trip was twice as long, I truly enjoyed the experience and would reccomend Autopia and Sid to anyone wishing for a proper adventure.
