This spectacular UNESCO protected site will not fail to take your breath away, especially from the top of Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's, highest point at 4543m above sea level. Be awestruck in the landscape's every direction, from the deep valleys to the jagged mountain peaks. Once again, wildlife lovers will get a thrill from Ethiopia's animal range: over 20 large mammal species and over 130 bird species reside in the park. Amongst these, you can spot the gelada baboon, the carcal (large cat), and the three meter wing-spanned lammergeier (bearded vulture). Endangered species can also be found, including the Ethiopian wolf and the Walia Ibex, a wild goat found nowhere else in the world. Some say the Simien Mountains are the rival of Colorado's Grand Canyon; the only way to find out is to see them for yourself.

At Debark you will sign in at the park headquarters, pick up your guide and scout and head up into the mountains .The road continues all the way to the first camp at Sankaber, but you’ll be dropped off on the way for a leisurely 3-4 hour acclimatization hike. The stunning views hit you as soon as you get out of the vehicle as you walk along the ridge. Today's trek covers a distance of approximately 12km and takes around 5-6 hours. The hike goes through highland grasslands, heather forests, cultivated fields and follows a spectacular escarpment with dramatic views. We will encounter the friendly Gelada baboons, foraging in big groups. A stunning viewpoint at the Jinbar Falls is reached after clambering a few rocks. This waterfall plunges several hundred meters down into the abyss. At the end of the day we pass through the welcoming village of Gich where the local people are happy to prepare a well-deserved coffee. The coffee ceremony is an important social event in Ethiopian culture. The camp for the night is not far from the village. Overnight camping.

We took the 3-day, 2-night trip to Imet Gogo with Danakil Depresion Tours. In short, we were very satisfied – especially compared to other providers. They combined groups or cut costs by using inferior equipment. We felt like we were in really good hands with Danakil Depression Tours. Our driver, Haile, was great, as was our guide,Gashaw. Both spoke excellent English. Gashaw was able to explain everything about the Simien Mountains to us and accommodated our hiking pace. The little extras surprised us. For example, the hot water bottle worked wonders in the nighttime temperatures around zero degrees. The chef and his assistant were available around the clock and accommodated our every need. We would book with Danakil DepressionTours again anytime.

The Simien Mountains must be one of the World's best kept secrets, the views are absolutely stunning. 1000 metre cliffs, 500 metre waterfall with wildlife and much more. A lot of the time you are above 3200 metres and it is possible to hike to over 4400 metres. Mickey the owner of Danakil Depression Tours organised this trip for me and it was brilliant. Unlike some tour operators Mickey employs some of his own people in the different areas where his company runs trips. This means he has a level of control over the tours that he runs which is not something not all operators have. This also means there is a degree of flexibility that can respond to the situation. For example in some parts of Ethiopia the FCDO recommends against travelling, but I travelled from Bahis Dar - Gonder - Simien Mountains and did not see any signs of conflict and I was not troubled by the military or FANO checkpoints, so yes I travelled against FCDO advice but I'm happy I did. Zemen my guide in the mountains, in discussions with me, adapted the planned activities to take account of my capabilities and wishes, and I did everything I wanted to safely and without concerns. Our cook (employed by Mickey) was a great guy and prepared delicious, nutritious and plentiful food. In summary a great trip to a part of Ethiopia which is sadly neglected by many tourists. So big thanks to Mickey and his team.

The 3 day Simien Mountains Tour was great. Unfortunately I ended up being the only one on the tour as two other people cancelled. However, the guide spoke good English and we ended up having some good conversations. I was well looked after and fed by the team of 6. We saw a variety of wildlife, including 5 Red Wolves and lots of Gelada monkeys. Mickey came to my hotel in Addis and gave me what I felt was honest information on the current security situation in Amhara province. This enabled me to make an informed decision and go on the tour. Everything, was organized from Addis, flights to/from Gonder, pickup, vehicle, gear, tents, food and all ran smoothly I would recommend Mickey and Danakil Depression Tours. A trip from God's own country to the Heaven on earth Simien Mountains, this was a dream come true for me and my family. From the day we contacted Danakil Depression Tours to the day before our travel, all details were promptly communicated and handled by Mr.Mickey. Our tour manager Mr Danilo was exceptional in managing the trip schedules, which at times had some slippages mainly due to unexpected weather conditions. He was more of a good travel companion and friend than being a guide. Though it was a group tour, the itinerary was well planned that we had enough time for our personal activities as well. We truly had our most memorable vacation so far and will surely go on more tours with Danakil Dpression Tours.
