Some roads are just roads. The road to Tusheti is a test.

Open only three months a year, this mountain pass is not for everyone — and that's exactly the point. You'll cross the Abano Pass at 2,926m in a 4x4 Mitsubishi Delica — hairpin bends, clouds below the road, sheer drops with no guardrails. It's the highest motorable pass in Georgia. It earns your arrival.

Over three days, you'll move through stone villages that feel genuinely untouched — Omalo, Dartlo, Kvavlo, Chesho, Parsma, Girevi — each with its own towers, trails and stories. You'll sleep in a family guesthouse where the host cooks dinner and someone always pours chacha. You'll share meals with five strangers who leave as friends.

This is the Georgia most people never find.

Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness

The itinerary can be changed due to weather or delay with back to Tbilisi, so it's important to be flexible and open to changes in the schedule.

The road — Abano Pass is rough, steep and has no guardrails. Motion sickness is common. Bring your own medication if prone. This is part of the experience — not a problem to solve.

The tour includes comfortable accommodations (single or double rooms) and delicious traditional meals, but please note that the level of comfort may be lower than what you are used to.

The vehicle — Mitsubishi Delica 4x4. Built for this road. Not luxury — reliable, safe and the right tool for the terrain.

The Abano Pass sits at approximately 2,850m — the highest motorable road in Georgia. There are no guardrails on most of it. The drops are real. The clouds are sometimes below you. In summer the surrounding peaks still carry snow. Flocks of sheep cross the road led by shepherds who do this every year, completely indifferent to the 4x4 crawling behind them. You will stop. They will not hurry. The pass takes about 45 minutes to cross. Most people go quiet somewhere in the middle of it. That's normal.

There are both pagan and Christian religious buildings in Dartlo, including the 19th century Dartlo Church and the late medieval Nachauridzes family tower. The Iakhsari Icon Complex, a shrine on the slope of Dartlo Mountain, is dedicated to a pagan deity and the complex includes a hall, sacristy, flag tower and women's page, among other buildings.

2

Diklo

While the harsh climate and difficult road conditions mean that the village is depopulated during the winter season, the village offers peace, freedom and fresh mountain beauty.

3

Shenako

The village of Shenako is famous for its authentic Tusheti house towers, built in the Middle Ages from black flat stones and wood. The ground floor of these towers was used for livestock, while the upper floor was used for living and protection from intruders. In Shenako, visitors can see St George's Church, which was built in the 19th century. This free-cross domed building is made of slate and limestone and has eight narrow and arched windows in the dome. The church is a good example of traditional Tushetian architecture with its whitewashed walls and octagonal, tin-covered dome with a pyramidal roof. The church also has a rectangular doorway with three semi-circular arches on three sides and a square bell tower (of which only the foundations remain). Visitors can also enjoy the stunning Lavgardan slate shelf that surrounds the church, gate and minarets. Shenako is a must for travellers interested in Tushetian history and architecture.

The fortress has been partially restored in recent years. The village's houses, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, are examples of the region's distinctive architecture. With only 37 inhabitants, Omalo is an idyllic place to explore the culture and history of Tusheti.

I loved this trip! Koba and Gotcha were awesome guides. The lady running the guesthouse was so kind, an gracious host, and an amazing chef. Koba made sure we were always enjoying ourselves and had everything we needed. Tusheti is so beautiful. I really recommend this trip! I also felt really safe on the road when I am usually someone that is really scared of being in cars!

It was a tremendous experience going to Tusheti with expert guidance from Jonah and exceptional driving by Vepho. The 3 day trip even with some rain went beyond our expectations. We highly recommend this trip for anyone seeking to experience another and different part of Georgia. Even with some rain it didn’t dampen the excitement of visiting the different villages. Jonah had expert knowledge of the area, which just added to the pleasure of the trip. Vepho’s driving was beyond perfection and his kindness showed when proactively stopping for photos along the way up Tusheti’s roads. Madloba! Jennifer and Ken

Tusheti tour was a trip of a lifetime for me and its something I've never experienced. Despite rocky roads I felt very safe and both the tour guide Koba and driver Verpho were very experienced. Tour was so interesting as we were able to explore remote mountain villages and meet their lovely residents. I would definitely do it again and wish to return with my family. Thank you for everything I will never forget the kindness of Georgian people! Victoria.

Our family trip to the Tusheti Mountains was truly unforgettable. The landscapes were stunning, but what made the experience so special was our amazing team, Koba and Gotcha. Gotcha’s professional driving kept us calm on the steep cliffside roads, and we always felt safe in his hands. Koba has a gift for sensing when someone is nervous during high altitude drives, and his humor and stories made the long rides fun and relaxing. Together, they made us feel welcome everywhere we went, from family guesthouses to hidden villages. With guides like Koba and Gotcha, we didn’t just visit Tusheti, we experienced it. If you are planning to go, I cannot recommend them enough. Having the right team makes all the difference, and thanks to them this was the trip of a lifetime.

This tour honestly exceeded my expectations. The views throughout were absolutely breathtaking, every turn felt like a postcard. From the moment we were picked up to the moment we were dropped off, everything ran so smoothly. Anna was brilliant. Her communication from booking to the end was spot on, she’s got a great sense of humour, and she even checked in on us during the trip. Jonah was an incredible guide, full of knowledge about Tusheti’s history and a fantastic photographer too. And Gotcha handled the tricky route like a pro. All in all, a solid 10/10, I’d recommend this tour to anyone

Spectacular scenery in this remote area of Georgia. We were lucky enough to stumble upon a festival with music and dance and art. Our guide Jonah was knowledgeable and fun. He was able to go with the flow a bit when something took more time or caught our interest: stopping to chat and drink cha cha with the locals, taking in the awesome scenery, admiring a shepherd and his flock. Our driver Goce was excellent handling the roads. Our guesthouse in Omalo was clean and comfortable and we had great meals there. The last stop on the tour was at a very touristy restaurant which served disappointing food (I also stopped there on another tour and had a not great meal as well) - we would’ve preferred to skip that.

Are you looking for a special Georgian trip? Then you should go to Tusheti. While riding a 4WD vehicle up and down the steep mountains, incredible nature awaits you. The scenery Tusheti shows you changes every day as the weather changes, so it can always be an exciting trip. However, to go to Tusheti, you should go with a local expert. With Jonah, who is well-versed in Georgian culture, history, and foreign affairs, David, who can travel the wild and vast Tusheti without a map, and Ana, who will carefully check everything from the preparation to the process and the end of the trip, your Tusheti tour will be fantastic. I give it a score of 12 out of 10.
