Belize has long been a birder’s best-kept secret. In fact, some people say that if you’re not a birder when you arrive in Belize, you’ll be one by the time you leave.
Almost half of the land in Belize is managed as reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and protected habitats. Many are managed by the Belize Audubon Society and these protected areas provide a rich diversity of natural ecosystems where birds thrive.

Sittee River Village
This tour begins just before daybreak with a drive through Sittee River where the lush vegetation attracts many species of birds in Belize. Be sure to keep your eyes open and your binoculars handy as you are bound to encounter spectacular plumage, stirring calls, and the steady drumming of a hummingbird’s wings. Some of the tropical birds often spotted in the area are keel-billed toucans, fork-tailed flycatchers, tropical kingbirds, Amazon kingfishers, blue crowed mot-mot, and harpy eagles. Belize is home to more than 500 identified species of birds, with an average of five new species discovered each year. With 66% of the country still forested, the species and variety of birds visible to viewers varies.

This tour was fantastic! Dirk was incredibly engaging and went out of his way to make sure that we had a rewarding trip. He was able to spot keel billed and colored aracari toucans, and these were the birds that my wife was dying to see. Yeah!!

Dirk was awesome!! Was a great trip for a group of novice birders. We saw lots of tanagers, toucans, and social flycatchers. It was so helpful to have a guide that was knowledgeable and able to seek out the birds we were excited to see. 10/10 would book again! :)

Our birding trip with Dierk was amazing! He is an excellent birder - extremely knowledgeable about Belize species, songs, habitats and behavior. He's also a really fun, nice guy. We spotted close to 60 species from trogons to tanagers. We also watched a flock of keel-billed toucans feeding! This trip was a highlight of our time in Hopkins. We highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys birds - from seasoned birders to curious novices.
