Belize has long been a birder’s best-kept secret. In fact, some people say that if you’re not a birder when you arrive in Belize, you’ll be one by the time you leave.
Almost half of the land in Belize is managed as reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and protected habitats. Many are managed by the Belize Audubon Society and these protected areas provide a rich diversity of natural ecosystems where birds thrive.

Sittee River Village
This tour begins just before daybreak with a drive through Sittee River where the lush vegetation attracts many species of birds in Belize. Be sure to keep your eyes open and your binoculars handy as you are bound to encounter spectacular plumage, stirring calls, and the steady drumming of a hummingbird’s wings. Some of the tropical birds often spotted in the area are keel-billed toucans, fork-tailed flycatchers, tropical kingbirds, Amazon kingfishers, blue crowed mot-mot, and harpy eagles. Belize is home to more than 500 identified species of birds, with an average of five new species discovered each year. With 66% of the country still forested, the species and variety of birds visible to viewers varies.

Dirk was an excellent bird guide able to spot a wide variety of birds as we toured the area. His knowledge of birds was excellent, evident from spending substantial time with the Audubon Society. He also had a lot of historical knowledge of the area and made our birding adventure a great experience.

Our guide, Dirk, had previously worked for the Audubon Society, and had an expert's knowledge of Belizean birds. This made for an excellent guided tour, and he was able to constantly point out birds that we probably wouldn't have seen on our own. The highlight was seeing and hearing several toucans and parrots. Dirk was great company, constantly informative about local culture, politics, and history, as well as being very lighthearted and funny. He apparently knows everybody in town, and greeted and waved to several locals as we drove around. This tour was the highlight of our visit.

Dirk is extraordinary. You are getting a real treat because not only is Dirk a guide, he’s an experienced conservationist and former Audubon Belize employee. He’s a community leader, participating in community planning and emergency response. I learned so much from Dirk, about birds, hydrology, conservation policy, and the importance of being good to your neighbors. Cannot recommend Dirk more highly.

Our experience was outstanding! Our tour guide, Dirk, was engaging, friendly and highly knowledgeable. He shared a variety of information about the several species of birds sighted, as well as information about the local environment, varied habitats, and even about the Hopkins Village Community and Sittee Creek village. We had never been birding previously, and this was a wonderful introduction to that activity. Thanks!

We had an excellent trip with Dirk, the local expert! In two hours we saw about 40 different bird species. Dirk's enthusiasm was obvious, not only for showing us the local birds but also seeing them himself. He is definitely a birder himself and it shows.

After seeing myriad birds, including two (2!) types of toucans, we can check this item off our list. But the true highlight was Dirk, our guide. He was not only knowledgeable and patient, but his genuine kindness to us and to everyone we saw as we drove along the Hopkins streets, as well as Dirk knowing the people by name, was a delight. In Hopkins, while the surroundings are unbelievable, the people of this town are the treasure.

Dirk was a fantastic guide! He was great at helping us spot them and he’s great with the calls too! Such a fun personality and very passionate about what he does. We even saw a toucan!! Even if you don’t know much about birds, it’s worth going out with Dirk. And he keeps a list of what birds you see and emails it to you later!

Dirk was a fantastic tour guide! We were a group with a range of birding experience and it was a fun time for all. The weather conditions during our tour were not ideal (incoming cold front and a bit of rain) so bird activity was a bit reduced but we still saw so many new species and Dirk did his best to make sure we saw the species we had hoped to see.

This tour was fantastic! Dirk was incredibly engaging and went out of his way to make sure that we had a rewarding trip. He was able to spot keel billed and colored aracari toucans, and these were the birds that my wife was dying to see. Yeah!!
