Bay of Kotor

Near a small village called Rose, there are three most impressive Submarine Tunnels which were built by the Yugoslav Army. The outside of the opening is designed and covered by fake rocks so they would not be invisible to satellites or spy planes. When we say this tunnel is the best hidden sight in Montenegro, we mean it literally. Built during the 1970s by the Yugoslav Navy, this tunnel was designed to stealthily host submarines and small ships. The entrance features a peculiar construction covered with fake rocks designed to make the spot invisible to unsuspecting eyes. The tunnel is a part of a fascinating and little-known series of similar tunnels and stealth locations built by the Yugoslav Army along the coasts of Montenegro and Croatia. Two smaller tunnels are located nearby, but the one near Rose is the largest, the most interesting to explore, and actually the only one that used to host submarines.

Mamula Fortress

The Mamula Fortress was built in 1853. At this time, Montenegro was under Austro-Hungarian rule. The fortress is named after the Austro-Hungarian general, Lazarus von Mamula. who commissioned the construction of the building. Mamula lays between two other fortifications from the same period – fort Arza, Luštica and Cape Ostro on the opposite side. The spot was chosen for its strategic position at the very entrance to the bay, but the story of Mamula didn’t end there. During both world wars, it was used as a prison due to its isolated position. The location gained a notorious reputation during World World 2, when the army of Benito Mussolini turned it into a concentration camp. Stories of unspeakable horrors can still be heard today. After this chapter in its history, the island and the fortification remained deserted for many years. Nowadays, Mamula is set to become a tourist resort; a project met with an ambiguous response from the locals due to the gloomy history of the place.

  • Grear experience!

We booked a private trip for two people (four on boat - with the Captain and his assistant) and it was an amazing experience. The staff picked us up at the dork and communication is very smooth. We customized the trip and booked for four hours. We visited many places and swam in the blue cave area and also an amazing beach. Our Captain Danilo was amazing. He has great skills and our ride was not bumpy at all, smooth on the sea. He introduced us on all the sites and answered all our questions patiently along the way. He got an amazing playlist which we enjoyed a lot along the four hours. Danilo and his assistant are both super kind. Highly recommend!

Thankfully while walking through the old city, Kristian hdd handed out a brochure and invited us to do a tour. I took it and said I would review it. We still hadn't decided on a plan but Kristian was responsive at the ninth hour and very late at night. I decided to do a private tour so we could manage the time and be flexible. We were provided information on the sites as we traveled, fun music was played which provided the right vibe. I will say only complaint the private tour is slightly pricey and I think more could be provided at that cost, at least a stop to Perast especially since we had no interest in swimming for 30 mins. in the blue cave. At the start of the morning, it can be chilly so keep that in mind. Bring appropriate clothing. Once the sun comes out, the water, views and experience is absolutely stunning and will feel magical.

Thank you to Kristian for suggesting us this amazing boat tour of 3 hours! Really well spent day when the European summit was happening in Montenegro and all roads were closed. • Thrilling boat tour to the blue caves

A thrilling ride with the speedboat out of the bay of Kotor to the Blue Caves along the Adriatic coast. There, one could also jump into the water and swim a lap. The young boat captain was very friendly and explained a lot along the way, also answering questions in English. On the return trip, we stopped at the small island "Lady of the Rock" to visit the museum (entrance included). After almost 3 hours, we were back. I can only recommend this tour. It was a lot of fun. Ticket for adults: 46 €.

We booked with Kristian. He and his sister were very enthusiastic and helpful. The tour itself was actually with their father. It was fun to hear some of the history of Kotor on the tour. Everything was smooth and the sights can’t be beat!

  • It’s an amazing they show you everything in the bay from old man made church’s on the water to super yachts.

Best boat tour I’ve ever been on. You should definitely go on this if you’re in Kotor or even Europe. The owner and tour guides are super polite and really know what they are showing and talking about. 10/10

Alex gave us a fantastic tour of the bay! He was lovely to be with , and generously shared his knowledge and passion for the area (which is stunning and interesting). We never felt rushed, and even had a fantastic swim by the Blue Cave. Would Definitely recommend!!!

We took a private boat tour for four people. I highly recommend sailing with the skipper Mikhaelo — he was professional and really nice, took us to beautiful places, and explained everything in an interesting way. It was a lot of fun, and I recommend taking the 3-hour tour.🤗
