Explore Hawke’s Bay by bike – a fun, easy SELF-GUIDED cycle ride to visit Hawke’s Bay leading wineries and choose a wine tasting or grab a bite to eat, before heading back to Napier and your start point.
This is a SELF-GUIDED ride - we will give you a map. Allow at least 3.5 hours for these routes with 1-2 winery stops.
NOTE: not all wineries are open everyday, please note winery opening days below.
Your route is on a dedicated cycle pathway (from 40km/25 miles approx. 2.5 hours cycling beside the Pacific Ocean to trails through farmland, orchards, river stop banks & estuarys.
Visit wineries along the way - you have 2 options for routes:
LOOP TRAIL 40km/25miles - wineries along this trail - Mission OPEN 7 DAYS, Church Road OPEN 7 DAYS, Urban Winery OPEN Thurs-Sun).
OR COASTAL Trail 50km/31miles return - wineries along this trail - Clearview OPEN Wed-Sun, Elephant Hill OPEN Thurs-Sun.
NOTE you MUST BOOK the wineries, they will always be busy (sometimes SOLD OUT) on cruise days!

What To Expect
Ahuriri Napier isite Visitor Information Centre
Your tour starts by walking to our base on Marine Parade, Napier. 650m from your drop off point - Napier isite. You will see the beach coastal trail behind the isite, take this to our base (turn back towards the port) to collect your bikes. Check out the Napier pier along the way.
Hawke's Bay Trails
Your cycle tour starts at the Takaro Trails site at 26 Marine Parade, Napier. You will start with a tour briefing to determine how far you will be cycling on your route today. NOTE if you want to visit a winery PLEASE BOOK directly with them. Some days they are BOOKED OUT and you wont get a tasting. Get going and cycle down the coastal trail towards the spectaculer Cape Kidnappers which you can see in the distance. After 8km, you can either turn up the Tutaekuri River and head to Brookfields, Church Road (open 7 days PLEASE BOOK) or Mission Estate (open 7 days PLEASE BOOK) wineries OR keep following the coastal cycle trail across the Tukituki River via Black Bridge to head to Clearview (open Wed-Sun PLEASE BOOK) or Elephant Hill (open Thurs-Sun PLEASE BOOK) wineries. You choose, they are all around 22km/14 miles ride away from the starting point. YOU MUST return though so thats another 20-22km! We will give you a MAP to follow.

5.00Great way to see and enjoy Napier. We booked this as a tour from our cruise ship. It was an easy shuttle ride into town. Instructions were clear with map and safety gear and a saddle bag to put any bags and jacket. It's a big ride but the ebikes were amazing, very comfortable and easy to use. Also they said to call them if we weren't going to make it back in time and would come to get us. We even had time for a cold beer and walk around the shops before catching shuttle back to the ship

5.00The couple who runs the bike shop are very friendly and take great care of the bikes and equipment. They had great recommendations of bike paths to travel. Only down side was that by booking through Viator your price nearly doubles. Next time I would reserve the bikes directly through the shop.

4.00This bike ride was very enjoyable. The bikes provided were in very good condition and easy to ride. We skipped the trip to the winery and just enjoyed the ride along the coast. There were little towns to stop in, a coffee bus along the path, and many places to just stop, sit on a bench or walk on the beach.

5.00This is a self guided bike tour in Napier. If you wish to go to the wineries you need to make your own reservations. Napier has a beautiful harbor and Scranton’s with paved bike trails. There are several bike routes to choose from all of which are paved trails. Bikes were pedal assist and worked well.

5.00The people at the location where you pick up the bikes are very friendly, very accommodating, and very knowledgeable about the area and how the “Pedal assist” not fully my automatic E-bikes work. We had a great ride along the shore to a remote winery and then lunch along the waterfront by our selves, nobody else to worry about either. Good times for sure!!!
I recommend to book a E-bike if you are not use to cycling.

3.00We've just book normal standard bikes for our trip. Maybe we were just unlucky cause we had the wind most of the time from the front that made our experience together with a standard bike not so enjoyable. For people who never cycle, it was hard. Also majority of the route till up to the winery we cycle next to the busy roads. Maybe my expectations was to high, cause I've imagine all this beautiful sceneries before reaching the winery but it unfortunately was not that impressive. We visited the Church Road Winery for wine tasting, which we were told will take us about 90min to reach. The wine tasting was lovely!! I highly recommend that and maybe a E-bike to make this outing enjoyable!!

4.00And lovely experience with good equipment fitted to the participants. Beautiful countryside and helped by scorching weather! The wineries are always worth a visit, but the cycling helped to make it a trio to remember. Slight niggle in that the roadworks nearby meant the cycle route was diverted and the staff had only recently learned about it and amended the route. The bikes themselves performed well however my partners bike lost top gear which hampered progress a little. The staff were super helpful and accommodating. Overall a definite must do event whilst inn the Napier!

4.00I loved the e bike to the wineries. The bikes were very nice and worked well. The add should have a few details for a better experience. Half day is not long enough. The wineries are a minimum of 1 hour ride away. The trails are nice and not much time on city streets. Also, wineries don’t open until 11, so 10 am would be a better start time.
