Our trip to Bach Ma National Park began with meeting our guide, Hung. What a lovely young man he was, with excellent spoken English and a genuine enthusiasm for the area. We were picked up in what appeared to be a relatively new transit limousine, which made for a very comfortable journey from Hue. Upon arriving at the park, we transferred into a secondary vehicle. It was a little older but more than capable of tackling the mountain roads ahead. We travelled up to the 12km marker where we stopped and received our equipment for the day. Each guest was provided with a waterproof bag containing: * Lunch * Two bottles of water * A poncho * Snacks With supplies sorted, we set off on foot. The first section of the trail involved a steep climb that eventually looped back towards the main road. At first this seemed rather odd, until I looked to my right and noticed a sizeable section of road had disappeared down the mountainside. Suddenly the detour made perfect sense. From there we boarded motorbikes and were transported further up the mountain. The ride itself was great fun and saved what would have been a very long uphill walk. Once at the top, a short but steep hike took us to the summit. Lunch was enjoyed overlooking one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen. The panoramic scenery across the mountains and coastline was worth every step taken to get there. After eating, we rang the summit bell three times for luck before beginning the next stage of the adventure. Given what lay ahead, I was hoping the bell was fully charged with good fortune. Back on the motorbikes, we descended to the starting point of the jungle trek. This is where the real work began. The terrain was steep, uneven and challenging throughout. Proper walking boots are an absolute must. In several sections, a steel rope has been installed to assist with the descent. As someone weighing 19 stone, I can confirm the rope passed its stress test with flying colours. As we continued deeper into the jungle, we reached the famous Five Lakes. The scenery here was beautiful, and there was an opportunity to swim in Lake Three. Several members of the group eagerly took advantage of this, while we opted to preserve what little energy we had left for the remainder of the hike. The trail eventually became a little easier before reaching a crossroads, where we made a detour to Rhododendron Waterfall. The waterfall itself was impressive and provided a welcome excuse to stop for a few minutes before tackling the return journey. The final stretch involved hiking back to the main car park, another motorbike ride, crossing the collapsed road section once more, and finally returning to our transport back to Hue. This is genuinely one of the hardest hikes we have ever completed and I would comfortably rate it a 9/10 for difficulty. The humidity alone is relentless and can drain your energy surprisingly quickly. Bring extra water if possible, as you’ll be grateful for it. This is not a trek for inexperienced hikers or anyone uncomfortable with heights. Some of the drops alongside the trail are significant and even had me paying close attention to where I was putting my feet. Insect repellent is highly recommended, although our guide advised avoiding products containing lemongrass as they can attract bees. We were also warned about leeches, particularly the green variety, which Hung informed us from personal experience can deliver a very painful bite. It was one of those moments where you immediately start checking your boots every few minutes. The trek was brutal, exhausting, hot and at times challenging both physically and mentally. Yet somehow that made reaching the end feel even more rewarding. One point worth mentioning is the difficulty rating. Many Tripadvisor-listed excursions describe this trek as “moderate”, but we felt that significantly understates the challenge involved. My partner has some breathing and back issues and regularly completes moderate walks without difficulty. This trek was on a completely different level. The steep descents, uneven terrain, exposed roots, rocks and occasional scrambling required constant concentration. She felt that anyone who is unsteady on their feet, lacks confidence on rough ground, or has mobility concerns should think carefully before booking. The scenery is incredible, but this is very much a strenuous jungle hike rather than a casual nature walk. A special thank you to Hung, who was outstanding throughout the day. He was knowledgeable, friendly, sociable and clearly passionate about sharing Bach Ma with visitors. He helped make a difficult trek enjoyable and was always happy to answer questions along the way. If you’re looking for an adventure beyond the usual tourist attractions and don’t mind earning your views the hard way, this trip is absolutely worth it.

We took part in the Trekking Day organised by this fantastic group! It was a wonderful adventure through the jungle—we walked along a watercourse and swam in a large pool beneath a waterfall. The guide shared so many interesting insights along the way. We even visited a tunnel dug by the Viet Cong during the American War. A true immersion in Nature with a capital N! Highly recommended! A big hug to the organisers—with affection, Stefano & Katia

Very well organised and good communication throughout. Great food and plenty of water - looked after well. Felt safe the whole time but also exploring and sense of adventure. Lots of cool sections to the day which was broken up well and good pace. Incredible place to see. 100% recommend. Great value.

Absolutely amazing day exploring the National Park.of the White Horse. Currently the road up to the walks and summit house is washed out by a landslide. We made it up by with our guide. This involved a short hike round the slip then motorbikes up the 12km. These can be sorted by rhe visitor centre at bottom or pre-booked i think. Walking 12km up the road in 40 degree heat of April would not be pleasant. Once up, the walks are relatively short and shady but there is some scrambling along the 5 Lakes which are amazing for swimming (Lake 2). The kids managed this ok (over 10yr). We would rate this as probably our best day in Vietnam.

Great National Park and very friendly guide. Not organized well enough. Two group members were lost for 20-30 minutes because the motorbike drivers had not been given the right instructions - they were not lost together but all alone one by one. One was even given directions to go down a path the group never went, where she could have been seriously lost in the rain forest! She found her way back to the group on her own (1 km). If motorbikes always drived together (e.g. two and two), no one would have been all alone. Also, it would have felt safer if the motorbike drivers had been introduced. Finally, this is a challenging trek! This could have been stated more clearly.
