At first glance, Thessaloniki can seem to tell the single story of a bustling modern Greek city. Step into the markets, though, and another city – and narrative – begins to appear. Traces of its Ottoman past remain in the street plan, the memory of Sephardic Jewish commercial life still shapes the old market grid, and the food carries the marks of Asia Minor, the Balkans, Pontus, and the Caucasus.

Another fabulous Culinary Backstreets experience with a true local foodie. Ioannis is so entrenched in the food scene in Thessaloniki that every stop was a beautiful story not to mention a delicious moment. In addition to being a lover of the architecture of the city - a perfect combination for me!

I'm a huge fan of Culinary Backstreets, both in Thessaloniki and other cities around the world. This was a great introduction to Thessaloniki both via its food but also hitting several important cultural landmarks along the way. If the tour had a weakness, it was that it tried to do too much. I had to say no to the sixth pastry shop! But a total five-star experience!

Four of us booked this tour. And we are so glad we did. We all agreed this was one of the best, if not the best, food tour we have been on. The primary reason for this was because of our guide Dora. She was great. Interesting, informative, fun. She made it so much more than just a food tour, incorporating meaningful information about culture and history. Highly highly recommend. Thank you.
