Sigiriya Lion Rock
Sigiriya Rock, also known as Sinhagiri (Lion Rock), is linked to the Ramayana through local legend. It is believed that Sigiriya was one of the fortresses or lookout points used by King Ravana during his reign in Lanka. The strategic location and commanding height of the rock made it an ideal place for monitoring surrounding areas and defending the kingdom. Some Ramayana traditions also suggest that Sigiriya was part of the region controlled by Ravana, used for military observation or protection routes during the time Seetha was held in Lanka. Today, while Sigiriya is historically known as the 5th-century rock fortress of King Kashyapa, it is included in the Ramayana Trail as a site connected to Ravana’s era, blending mythology, archaeology, and natural beauty.
Ritigala Forest Monastery
Ritigala, located near Habarana, is a mysterious and forest-covered mountain linked to the Ramayana. According to legend, when Lord Hanuman carried the Sanjeevani mountain from the Himalayas, a fragment fell at Ritigala, similar to Rumassala. Because of this belief, Ritigala is said to contain rare and powerful medicinal herbs not found elsewhere in Sri Lanka. The area is also associated with ancient sages and ascetics, making it a place of deep meditation and spiritual energy. Today, Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve is known for its ancient monastery ruins, dense jungle, cool climate, and unique biodiversity. As part of the Ramayana Trail, Ritigala represents mysticism, healing, and Hanuman’s divine mission.
