The Lower Omo Valley in the South of Ethiopia is perhaps one of the most ethnographically diverse regions in theworld. It served as an ancient meeting point as tribes migrated from all corners of Africa and now plays host to many different tribes each with unique and fascinating customs. If you can handle the challenges of travelling in this remote region, then the rewards are immense. Whether you are watching the traditional ceremony of Hamer people Jumping the Bulls or gazing incredulously at the site of a Mursi’s lip plates, this is a place unlike anywhere else on Earth. The landscape and wildlife of the Lower Omo Valley is an attraction in itself, terraced richly vegetated areas contrast with open savannah and despite widespread poaching, hippo (Lake Chomo) and dik dik, kudu, guinea fowl, gerenuk and various birds are frequently seen.

This village is the most beautiful and scenic of all villages in the Omo valley as it is perched on a high bend overlooking the Omo River and its flood plains. Beautiful pictures are always captured here, as the Kara people love to decorate themselves in intricate face and body paintings – many of which represent the plumage of the Guinea fowl. After we have experienced their way of life and unique culture we will proceed towards a relatively unvisited tribe called the Nygnangatom. The Nygnangatom are also referred to as the Bume Mursi. In the morning, after breakfast, we will drive to Omorate to see the Dassanech tribe. Omorate is the last town in Ethiopia before the border. As this is a sensitive border area, we are required to register our passports at the immigration and natural affairs office. This is a quick and easy process and should take no longer than 2minutes. After this brief stop, we will then walk through town to the side of the Omo River. From here we will either cross the murky brown waters by a traditional dugout or canoe. Once we are safely across the Omo River, we will visit the tribes of beautifully decorated Dassanech people. Once again we will be able to photograph these amazing people whilst we tour around their village, learning about their culture and their way of life. Once we have soaked in enough of their culture and sights, it will be back into the boat and back to Turmi for lunch and after some relaxation we continue to visit to keyafer for the Thursday market and we will spend sometime with bana and hamer tribes at the colorful market and we will drive to Jinka for overnight in ( emerald hotel).

Where do I start, there were too many good things to describe. We booked a 3-day, 2-night tour to visit the Mursi, Karo, Hamar, Bana and Dassench tribes and it was truly unforgettable. From the start Babi stood out: he offered a very clear, well-thought itinerary (the first reason we chose him), and importantly straight, honest pricing (the second reason). No haggling tricks, no hidden fees, just straightforward communication. That alone made us feel confident booking him while we were chatting with several other agencies. Itinerary & guiding: The itinerary was extremely fruitful and Babi did his best to slot in local events to maximise our experience. He provided a local tribe guide for every visit, so at each stop you had both Babi and a tribe guide walking with you, which made introductions and cultural exchange rich and respectful. Babi himself is unbelievably knowledgeable about Ethiopia, Jinka and the tribes; he answered every question and was always ready to explain context and stories. Food & accommodation: Amazing, amazing, amazing. Our hotel in Turmi was near the main road but felt like an oasis, quiet, set in a lovely big ‘garden’, clean rooms with mosquito nets and A/C (very important!). Every meal was a highlight. Babi asked if we wanted authentic local tribe food, we said yes, and he made sure we tried as many local dishes and coffee as possible. Delicious and memorable. Price & honesty: Excellent value. Babi quoted a reasonable price up front with no hidden extras. That contrasted with other agencies that started high and tried to slowly lower the price to win the booking. Babi’s transparency and directness were refreshing, he wasn’t trying to squeeze money out of us, he just wanted a smooth, honest booking. Personal touch & care: Babi is responsible, responsive, caring, a true professional guide and now a friend. He looked after us throughout the tour and even helped after the tour when we had an issue. Sharing dinner and honey wine on our last night together was one of the tour’s warmest moments. We’d happily meet him again!
