Mount Maunganui
Departing from the Tauranga Port Gates, the tour begins with a scenic drive past Mount Maunganui and a stop at the beautiful Mount Main Beach, famous for its golden sands, surf coastline, and views of the iconic Mauao. Leaving Tauranga behind, we travel inland across the Kaituna River and journey south through the lush Bay of Plenty countryside toward Rotorua, New Zealand’s geothermal and cultural heartland. Upon arrival in Rotorua, we stop at Sulphur Point for beautiful views across Lake Rotorua and an introduction to the region’s unique geothermal landscape. We then continue through the elegant Government Gardens and visit the historic Rachel Spring, once famous for its therapeutic mineral waters and closely connected to Rotorua’s spa heritage.
Te Puia
The highlight is a visit to Te Puia, home to the NZ Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and the world-renowned Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley. Experience an authentic Māori cultural performance featuring traditional waiata, poi, and haka, offering insight into the rich traditions and living culture of Te Arawa. Following is a guided exploration of Te Puia, including the national carving school, where master craftsmen preserve the art of traditional Māori wood carving. We also visit the Kiwi House for a rare opportunity to see New Zealand’s iconic kiwi bird in a specially designed nocturnal enclosure. Then on to the spectacular Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, where bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, silica formations, and geothermal landscapes reveal the immense volcanic power beneath Rotorua. The experience culminates at the famous Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, regularly erupting high into the air in an unforgettable display of natural energy.

Our guide was very personable and knowledgeable about the area and the Māori culture. She has lived in the area all her life so we got a lot of insight from a local perspective. The Māori cultural experience and school was educational and the geyser was cool to see as it spouted 10-20 feet into the air. She also pulled over and showed us a beautiful beach and a kiwi farm and told us about how they almost lost their entire crop because of pests that had been brought in that killed the crop.

Wow! What a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in learning about the indigenous people of New Zealand and the many natural wonders in New Zealand. The tour was led by a woman named Nicole and she was fantastic! She had such a assessed for life and a profound appreciation for the things we were seeing. I think she had as much fun showing us as we had seeing everything.

My wife and I enjoyed the day tour taken from Tauranga after our cruise ship, the Norwegian Spirit docked. Wicked Wanders Tour was as advertised and was enjoyable, especially our introduction to Mauri culture and New Zealand's geothermal events.

Our tour guide Nicolle was absolutely amazing. Her knowledge of the area and her exuberance were incredible. She went above and beyond I'm sure what was expected of the tour. She made a couple of stops that were her favorite and not a usual part of the tour. HIGHLY recommend this tour and her in particular.

Nicolie was a great guide with an obvious love of the area and its heritage. Her commentary for the journey was a perfect introduction and when we arrived at Te Puia we were treated to an excellent tour by ‘Mrs T’. You pack in a lot on this tour - highly recommended.
