Atm Cave Belize (actun Tunichil Muknal)
- Located a short drive from our office in southern Belize, the tour begins with a drive to the ranger post in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. - From there, proceed on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes, crossing three jungle streams along the way with your Belizean tour guide. - Once at the mouth of the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, swim across a spring-fed pool, using a rope for guidance. - And then the adventure truly begins, wading through the knee-high water until a network of vast tunnels, chambers, and passageways is reached. - Only after climbing up and into a remote ledge deep in the rear of the cave will you reach the sacred chamber once used by Mayan priests. - The ceremonial chamber still contains pottery, obsidian objects, bowls that once contained food offerings, and the famous skeleton of the Crystal Maiden. It takes approximately three hours to explore everything in this cave. - After exiting the cave, there will be a return hike through the jungle followed by a delicious picnic lunch.

If you are visiting Belize, hire Jimmy to be your guide. He is a wealth of knowledge about the culture and history of Belize and his passion for his country shines through. Jimmy is also very patient and kind. We traveled to Belize with our 16m old son, and Jimmy offered to watch him while we partook in an activity along the tour. Jimmy is always prompt, brings high energy and a personalized touch to all of his tours. If you want first class service and a bespoke tour experience, hire Untame Belize.

Hugh was our tour guide and his expertise was unmatched. We were one of the first to get there and did a private tour so it was just my husband and I, and Hugh. You are literally crossing rivers, swimming into a cave and hiking and climbing over rocks. This is not for the faint of heart. If you are claustrophobic, this is not for you. You definitely have to contort your body to get through som of these rock formations and have to lift yourself through some of these crevasses. Wear aqua shoes and socks. There are sharp rocks and a part of the tour where you take off your shoes and go through the ancient chamber, we did not wear socks and should have. The crystal stalactites and stalacmetes were like Baccarat chandeliers. They were so gorgeous! You can’t take any kind of equipment in to the caves like a GoPro or camera so you will have to burn them into your memory. If you have a good tour guide like Hugh, he will send you pictures later but it just doesn’t do it justice. This is something we will never forget and are forever grateful! Must do in Belize! It’s an all day event but worth it!

Not for the physically weak. It’s a very strenuous activity but was also the highlight of our trip. There is swimming, rock climbing and walking.

We didn't had the chance to take photos as it is prohibited. This has been one of the most incredible cave tours we have dobe in our lifes. We were able to see ancient maya artifacts and skeleton remains. The guides were very knowledgeable about the cave. My family of 9 enjoyed this tour. We totally recommend thid tour and airport shuttled with Untame Belize.

I’m so glad we went with UNTAME Belize for transportation! RJ picked us up from the airport as soon as we walked out of the doors. On our 2.5 hour drive to Hopkins we learned so much about Belize! RJ made the drive go by so quickly and was so nice! We also had Jimmy pick us up to take us to the ATM cave. Jimmy was so knowledgeable. He’s been doing this for 30+ years and it shows. He told us just about every tree, crop, school, and community in Belize. He even gave us recommendations for what foods to try in what areas of Belize. We loved how engaging he was. He also went out of his way to introduce us to some traditional foods/drink: tamarind, soursop, and creole bread...it was all delicious! I definitely recommend trying on your next trip to Belize. Jimmy drove us back to the airport as well. He was always on time and made the trips so quick. Definitely going to request Jimmy next time we go to Belize!

Are you ready to experience the magical adventures that Belize has to offer? Untame Belize will make it happen for you!!!! We didn’t do all of their tours but the ones that we did were all incredibly amazing! From the very beginning Rose organized everything and provided all the information and support we needed! We felt incredibly lucky when she joined us on the last adventure at the ATM cave! Our fantastic driver and now friend Brenton was the perfect person to spend hours on the road with!! Miss him already!!! We started off with horseback riding and Xunantunich... The horses were healthy and well cared for 😊 when we arrived at the top of the hill to see the ruins we were amazed- it was a very impressive Mayan community… Very uncrowded so we were able to appreciate its magnificence uninterrupted! Rose arranged for for a very knowledgeable guide Alyson to take us through. Our next adventures were zip lining and cave tubing both which provided adrenaline rushes and natural wonders with the stalactites and stalagmites in the cave!! Finally we visited the amazing ATM cave... this is almost indescribable you almost have to Google it… You can’t take cameras and for good reason because you are hiking through water and climbing over rocks and squeezing through channels as you work your way towards the Mayan sacrificial areas. This was not a cave where the Mayans lived only had sacred ceremonies. Pretty amazing that we are actually allowed to go in them and I cannot encourage you enough to do it if you are physically fit. All in all it was my first trip to Belize and definitely not my last… I can’t think Rose and Brenton and RJ enough for this amazing introduction to this incredible country !!
