This was an excellent tour. We learned fascinating stories and visited the former residences of Marie Laveau, Delphine LaLaurie, Jacques St. Germain, and more. John was an amazing guide with a great sense of humor and captivating storytelling style. He clearly knows the history inside and out and took the time to thoughtfully answer all of our questions.

Elaine was an amazing host! We learned so much and had a great time. We started at Louis Armstrong Park, which has a vast history of everything from lynchings to voodoo ceremonies that we probably could have spent the whole evening in this beautiful yet haunting space. We learned about Marie Laveau and how she came to wield such power throughout the New Orleans of her time and that of her descendants, as we visited the site of her home. We learned about Romeo Spikes, and how they kept suitors from sliding down gallery posts as a means of escape. We learned about Jean Lafitte, the pirate and privateer and - maybe - vampire? The site of his blacksmith shop was our midway stop, with a restroom and Purple Drank to get us through the rest of our stroll. Then we visited a property once owned by Delphine LaLaurie, a socialite who was suspected of the torture and murder of many enslaved people within those walls. That property has since brought nothing but pain and disappointment to its owners through the decades, including Nicholas Cage. Elaine filled us in on the Italian Mafia families who controlled the area and brought their own cruelty to New Orleans' legacy and the people who called it home. We had no idea that the city had been washed away by storms and burned down by fire multiple times, only to be rebuilt in the same unstable spots, often atop the final resting places of groups of people who had pain in life and death. No wonder so many areas seem haunted by their spirits. Elaine wove the story of New Orleans for us through both the sights she showed us and the tales she shared of the people and events that make up some of the rich history of this place. Highly recommend!
