We originally booked the Summit Lake Canoe Adventure. We were contacted and informed that the tour was discontinued, but that they could rebook us for the tour they are replacing it with which is a little pricier (no additional cost to us). We accepted. What was originally advertised to us was a guided hike and canoe with an abundance of wildlife and expert naturalists giving information. What we received was nowhere near what was advertised. (The company has since taken down the webpage they sent me off their website, so you can’t see what was originally advertised). The tour is also not listed on their drop down menu, so this is the one that comes closest to what they rebooked us for. The tour guide that met us at the ship had no information on us, had to get pointed out to us by another tour group with the same name, and basically just escorted us to the ferry. She was very nice, but was technically just the taxi to the ferry. Also the directions for where to go from Viator had us walking into town so if she had not been pointed out by others, we would have walked right past her to the listed pickup spot in town. Our tour guide that took us on the canoe, while a kind person, was an amateur (Sophie? She only said her name once). On our drive to the lake she regurgitated some basic Skagway/Haines facts that we had already heard on the ferry ride to Haines. We actually had to correct her because she misspoke on a few of them. We asked questions about local plants and wildlife on the road and on the lake. Most of the responses were “I don’t know” or “that’s a good question”. She informed us she has only been in Alaska for 1 month. We managed to see a bear on the way to the lake (side of the road) and another guest on the tour had to correct the guide on what type of bear it was. The ride was mostly painfully silent where we were expecting more facts about wildlife in the area. There was no hiking at all, which we were extremely dissapointed by. Once we arrived by car at the lake we got on the canoe and used the motor 99% of the time. This made it loud and so that we couldn’t hear anything in nature until we stopped at random places. All we did was ride along the perimeter of the lake and look at waterfalls. The only wildlife we saw was a couple of bald eagles, which the guide had no real information on. Once we arrived back at the dock, we went immediately back into the car. We then drove through the city of Haines and the guide gave random facts about buildings that nobody had interest in. It felt more like a way to waste time and fill the trip with nonsense. The “picnic style lunch” we arrived to was tiny, dry chicken wraps and bags of chips from the grocery store. We also arrived for lunch at 12:00 when the ferry did not leave until 1:00. The guide actually thought the ferry left at 1:45, so I’m not sure how she expected us to sit around for an hour and 45 minutes to eat lunch. We were all done with lunch within 15 minutes and then were told to just “hang out on the beach”. After we arrived back in Skagway via the ferry, the tour guide who checked us in was waiting but said she was not allowed to drop us in town rather than back at the cruise ship, so she left and we walked into town. My family and I were very excited for this hike/canoe for months leading up to this trip, and were greatly disappointed. For the over $200 per person that we paid, we certainly felt cheated. I would not recommend this trip to visitors.

This was an excellent tour, but not for the faint of heart. It's a long day. It requires a long ferry ride to Haines, which had great scenery and was narrated. That was followed by a bus ride through Haines to get to the mountain dock. The bus toured the small town of Haines, and that was weak and not necessary. Not sure why it is part of the excursion. The scenery at the mountain dock and lake was absolutely gorgeous. We went on a cold day, raining the whole time, foggy in places, but it was still beautiful. While this does involve a real canoe, and you can paddle, it's mostly unnecessary because the canoe has a small motor and the guide uses that to navigate -- not the tourists rowing. But even in the cold rain, it was beautiful. The Lunch was after the long day, about 4:00 p.m., and it consisted of just wraps and chips and cookies and water and coffee. Fine enough, but somewhat disappointing after such a long day. Then, you return back by bus through Haines, then return ferry, then back to the boat. This excursion is not very strenuous, doesn't involve much walking, but it is a long day. I still recommend this trip. Our guide was Nathan, and he was very good, knowledgeable and he did pay a lot of attention to safety.

This excursion was while on a cruise with Silversea and it is not as advertised . One canoe motor was broken and the curates had to paddle around a 3 mile lake, the guides are inexperienced college students looking for a job to hang out in the Yard, and the tour did not include Fort Seward as mentioned. The tour also has a lunch which consisted of a vegetable wrap across from the ship!! I opted for food onboard. BTW the lunch was at 4 PM the end of the canoe trip. Very laid back college kids and not well organized. The Chilkoot Lake is beautiful and well worth the trip!!
