Fenqi Hu Old Street
Fènqì Hú is a major station on the Alishan Forest Railway. This narrow-gauge railway, built during the Japanese colonial period, was originally used to transport timber from Alishan. Today, it has become a scenic tourist route. As it's also about the time for lunch when you arrive, "Fenqi Hu Bento" is something you should definitely not miss out!
Hinoki Village
Hinoki Village, located in the East District of Chiayi City, is Taiwan’s first forest-themed cultural and creative park. The village preserves 28 Japanese-style wooden buildings constructed during the Japanese colonial period, primarily using precious Alishan hinoki (cypress) wood. Originally, this area served as a residential zone for forestry employees and was known as “Hinokicho” at the time. These historical structures reflect Chiayi’s important role in Taiwan’s forestry industry. After careful restoration, the village reopened in 2014 as a vibrant cultural destination that blends history, creativity, and nature. With its strong japanese atmosphere and well-preserved architecture, Hinoki Village is often referred to as the “Little Kyoto of Taiwan.”
