Waterlooplein Market
We meet outside a cozy café in Waterlooplein, once a canal and the heart of the Jewish quarter. Now a bustling market, it reflects Amsterdam’s layered, imperfect charm.
We start underground — literally — with bold, bright Surinamese bites that hit hard with flavor and history. Born from migration, loved by locals, and hiding in plain sight.

We had a wonderful time with Flora today. We were the only ones in the group and we were so glad to have Flora as our personal guide. Going on a food tour is an excellent way to learn about the history and culture of the people. This food tour took us to some nice restaurants that offered dishes that were carefully selected, ones that would represent Amsterdam well. As customers, we got to taste the best in what these dishes had to offer. For example, I was leery in eating herring (encountered it in some hotel’s breakfast buffet before, didn’t like it), but not the one in this tour, I was planning to just taste it, but I actually liked it, the onions and sweet pickles that came with it worked really well together with the slightly slimy but totally not fishy and actually really fresh and even tasty herring. What a pleasant surprise! I ate both pieces! Everything else was great. Also, we were offered a drink every time we sat down at a restaurant (there were 4), except for the cheese tasting, where we were presented with a beautiful board of 4 different cheeses ranging from a few months in age to 18 months. All in all, this was an excellent food tour, we feel so very lucky that we signed up with Sherpa, and we are so glad to have Flora took us around Amsterdam, she was like a friend — sharing and making us feel right at home! Thank you, Flora! The only downside was we should have skipped breakfast altogether this morning so we had more room. This was a very satisfying tour in every ways.

Great tour. Our guide Flora did a fantastic job and managed to get our group all engaged. She even came up with her own game to laugh over a beer at one of the stops
