Waterlooplein Market
We meet outside a cozy café in Waterlooplein, once a canal and the heart of the Jewish quarter. Now a bustling market, it reflects Amsterdam’s layered, imperfect charm.
We start underground — literally — with bold, bright Surinamese bites that hit hard with flavor and history. Born from migration, loved by locals, and hiding in plain sight.

Ginevra was a lovely host of our food tour. She led us on a fun array of food experiences from Suriname-Dutch street food to a 1945 Eaton Salon restaurant for Dutch croquettes and also to a fabulous Brown Restaurant for pickled herring. The diamond of the tour was a traditional Dutch restaurant Proeflokaal A. v. Weed for delicious grandma stew. A time well spent in restaurants we might never have tried.

Flora and Shannon were great! Lovely gals and took us through the tour flawlessly. It would be better to have whispers so that all can hear as at times it was difficult to hear their commentary. All in all they were great!

I had a lovely tour with Ginevra, learning more about Amsterdam’s history while trying authentic local foods. It was also nice to get to know the other people on the tour and have a few sit down drinks/food as other tours can involve walking and standing for hours.

Geneva was very sweet and well-informed on Amsterdam. The walk was pretty fair and some of the roads were narrow, but that’s Amsterdam. Her food selection included a lot of hole in the walls that encompassed a fair amount of history and cultures that are unique to Amsterdam.
