Come with us for your Aurora hunt for an amazing and ethical experience underneath the Aurora Borealis. Leave the light pollution in Tromsø behind and travel into the Arctic wilderness. During this tour, our small team of Aurora guides check the forecasts & use local knowledge to decide on the best place to chase the Northern Lights. When we find the best spot, we will dress in warm thermal suits and boots, make a cosy campfire, and enjoy a homemade meal.
You'll be shown how to use your camera, photograph the Aurora, and our guides will take photos of you, available for free in web-sized resolution after the tour.
During our time together in the wilderness, we will collect data for a citizen science project and help protect the Arctic nature through responsible tourism.
Enjoy our hot chocolate before being returned to Tromsø island to your hotel. Though there is never a guarantee of seeing this phenomenon, our experienced team will do their best every night of the season.

We had a fantastic n memorable experience on this trip, guided by Magda n accompanied by driver Cristobal. Magda had kept us engaged through out - shared about Aurora, Aurora forecasting, Tromso weather, polar nights, Northern lights related beliefs in different countries etc. well Organised with emphasis on safety n on a comfortable minibus. They have selected picturesque location. Well aware of best location to view the Aurora. We have tried tours by 2 other operators n we really appreciate the effort by Magda.

After a very cloudy and snowy few days the weather over Tromsø finally decided we needed a break to start the new year and on the night of Jan 1st the skies cleared. This was our 4th Aurora hunt with Wandering Owl over the last few years, each time we've had a different guide. This night we had the wonderful Jordan joined by trusty driver Iliyan. The clear skies meant we didnt have to travel far out of Tromsø to get clear of the city light pollution and within 30mins we were pulling up in a prime spot near the EISCAT ground station. Lady Aurora was determined to put on a show that night and was already dancing across the sky above us. (This was the first time ive witnessed the aurora actively moving and coiling in real time rather than being a lazy drift, an inspiring sight). The clear night air meant the temperature rapidly plummeted to -30°C and Jordan and Iliyan were quick to insist that everyone be kitted out in their thermal suits and boots (they even had a few spare sets of hats and mittens). They set up camp fire in a very picturesque spot just off from the tour bus. My son struggled with the cold and the guys were more than happy for him to sit on the warm bus instead. Jordan was taking pro photos throughout the session, capturing us with the northern lights in all their glory and did exceptionally well in explaining how and why the lights form (as a qualified astrophysicist I was impressed, Kudos Jordan). The signature Wanderingn Owl soup was served as people huddled around the camp fire. The soup is delicious but my stomach struggles with it so I had brought alternative provisions which Jordan was more than happy with. After a couple of hours of activity the Aurora faded away and a cloud bank began to encroach on our site so Jordan decided it was time to move further south to find a new spot. Another 40min drive south we pull in to a lay by on the side of the E8 to a spectacular view of the mountains and Tromsø off in the distance. Here we had some hot chocolate and set up for a possible encore. Jordan was consistently being updated with solar activity apps and reports by the local guide networks all of which suggested that the lights were done for the evening. Jordan did catch some very faint arcs both north and south of us but they didnt last. I really have to compliment Jordan for his social interaction and having the patience of a saint, especially at the second stop as he accommodated a lengthy discussion with my son who is currently obsessed with storm chasing and was eager to compare the similarities to aurora hunting. Once it was clear that lady Aurora was done for the night we boarded the bus for the trip back to town. Iliyans passion for music kept us all entertained while Jordan actually completed editing and publishing his pictures from the night and emailed us all before we even got into the city. Easily the best display I've seen and an exceptional service by Wandering Owl once again. I cant recommend this team enough they make it all so efficient and effortless and have been a big contributor to my family and I fallingnin love with Tromsø. I hope to go hunting with them again in the future.

We did not make it on the tour. Pros: the tour operator was very responsive , and provided detailed information leading up to the tour. Cons: I got food poisoning before the tour and was unable to go. There were 2 spots available for the next evening, however the operator was unable to move me to that tour / did not offer a discount to rebook. The only option was to book a new ticket at full price. I will note that they gave me a letter to file a claim with my insurance very promptly.

Fantastic tour with a small group on the Northern Lights tour. Aneta, our tour guide, and Cristobal, our driver, made this trip an unforgettable experience. What amazing Northern Lights and breathtaking landscapes. They took care of our well-being with a campfire, soup, and hot drinks. Highly recommended at any time.

We had a great New Years Eve with Jordan and Cristobal sitting around the camp fire, taking photos and spotting the northern lights! They made everything fun and easy - the fire was set up before we even got our boots and suits on, the spot was spectacular and we were the only ones there, the soup and hot chocolate (all vegan and locally made) were delicious (even for those of us who are not vegan), the stories and facts helped us understand what we were seeing, and I’m sure the photos will be amazing. I would absolutely recommend this company, and this pair, to anyone. We felt so lucky to have them as our guides for a very special evening.

The team went over and above to research the best places to see the lights, even with cloudy forecasts. We were privileged to see the lights, we had a nice soup around the fire too!

Magda was our tour guide and Iliyan the mini van driver. On that night, we left a completely cloudy and snowy Tromsø. I must be honest, that I did not have bigh hopes at the beginning. Shortly after we left, Magda announced we would be driving a little bit past the border with Finland, so we could get clearer skies. We were almost reaching our destinatiom, when, suddenly, the skies cleared up and there was aurora activity, leading to a beautiful show! Both Magda and Iliyan were extremely nice, and also completely knowledgeable of where to go on that night. We were provoded with warm suits, boots (for us they were not really necessary, but nonetheless a good addition) and head lanterns. We set camp briefly into the forest while watching the lights, eating soup, drinking hot chocolate and hearing some stories from Magda. While there was aurora activity, she also took pictures from us with a beautiful sky as the background. We, then, packed everything up and were driven back to the meeting point. The aurora itself already makes an incredible experience, but Magda and Iliyan made it so it could be even more enjoyable

The Wandering Owl team- Isaac and Michael were exceptional tonight! We absolutely loved every minute of this tour! Isaac taught us about the science behind the lights. It was a cloudy night, and we weren’t sure whether we would see the lights, however Isaac guided us to a secluded spot and we saw them!! :) Thank you Isaac and Michael !!
