Imagine you are having lunch in a beautiful home welcomed by a kind family that shows you how to cook and teaches you to mix ingredients, fry in coconut oil, then sit down and eat all the good things you have cooked together. If it was just that it would be enough, but there is so much more. Nirosha shows you in a lunch all the reality that surrounds her, starting with her extended family, to welcome those who have been less fortunate, with the two shy girls but with amazing smiles. His classroom set up on the terrace to make even those with difficulties study. The lunch was definitely amazing but the lived experience fills not only the stomach but also the heart and if you are lucky enough to visit this island you can not miss a visit from Nirosha.

We had a lovely time at Nirosha! Apart from showing us how to make the curries from fresh spices, we were shown were in the garden nearly all the spices came and which part of the plant or tree they came from which was very interesting. Afterwards we had the food we prepared for lunch. Tasted delicious and incredibly fresh!

The Sri Lankan meal experience was organised by our travel agent cum guide, Nuwan. It is a short drive from Hikkaduwa. The host Nuwan’s sister is a teacher who runs this as part of her passion project. They opened their 250 year old ancestral home to us over a brief lunch authentic vegetarian Sri Lankan food. Something we were on a lookout for through the trip. After the lunch, She involved our kids with the various other children who tutor in her house to learn how to write their name in Sinhala. Overall, a great experience very very warm hospitality and scrumptious food. A must do if you are in the vicinity.

Cooking with Nirosha was an authentic experience. She welcomed us to her home with the whole family, they were all extremely helpful with us. Nirosha cooks in the traditional way, using local and tasty products, with the naturalness of a mother who cooks for her children. We thank Nuwan for giving us this chance and Nirosha for teaching us real Sinhalese cuisine.
