Fuad Tagiyev, our guide, though born long after the 1990 second Independence of Azerbaijan, was very well versed and knowledgeable about their history. He spoke very good English, Turkish and Russian. It was a treat to listen to him and the stories he told about the old City and downtown Baku. We did a 4 hours walking tour with him and it so happened that on that day it was just my two daughters and myself on this tour so it was a personal, most fun, casual and friendly walk. In fact at the end we were sorry to see him leave. Fuad’s tour took us to The Old City of Baku, which featured several mosques and statues. An interesting one was the Vahid Monument, the large, 3-meter-high bronze sculpture dedicated to the Azerbaijani poet and ghazal singer Aliagha Vahid, located just inside the entry gate of the Old Town. Another interesting Sculpture is the Girl with Umbrella located in Fountain Square in Baku. This is a popular photo spot situated near the first McDonald's restaurant that opened in Baku. The statue depicts a bronze girl holding an umbrella and talking on a mobile phone. This is a well-known feature of the central pedestrian area of Nizami Street. The old City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that blends history with modern life, featuring landmarks like the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. The area is also a vibrant center with shops, restaurants, cafes, and residential areas. Maiden Tower is the oldest monument in the Old City and is a symbol of Baku, which dates back to 7th-6th century BC Fuad took us to a famous sweet shop downtown, called The Gabala Sweet House. This has been in existence since 1927! The varieties of local sweets were so colourful and along with the most fragrant fruit tea, we were given about 40 varieties to taste. Yes FORTY!! Each was so delicious that it was difficult to narrow down. The pomegranate and nuts sweet was very nice. We walked out laden with packets and packets. Great to take back as gifts.
