3.00Our tour guide on our recent private tour of Basel was a very nice and enthusiastic guide who clearly wanted to provide us with a good tour. However she was lacking in a couple areas. First, she didn’t seem all that knowledgeable about Basel. We were expecting a coherent presentation about Basel’s history and perhaps Switzerland in general. A history spiel is the norm for walking tours, group or private. I learned more from my tour book. It was admittedly much easier to get from place to place but I’m sure we would have gotten there ourselves and saved $215. The other gaff worth mentioning is that we asked for a recommendation for a restaurant to have a traditional Swiss meal, hoping for some inside knowledge on a place offering good food at a reasonable price. She directed us to Walliser Kane which turned out be super expensive (64chf for schnitzel & fries!), clearly targeted at sucker tourists. We left after reading the menu and before ordering.

5.00Despite very wet weather Michael gave us a superb cultural and historical tour around the old town and little Basel. It was totally absorbing, stimulating, informative and most enjoyable.
