Description

The name "Hell" comes from the special geographical phenomenon of Iron Wheel and Turtle River. "Bungo Fudoki" records that Iron Wheel and the surrounding areas of Kamegawa have been emitting hot air, hot mud, and hot water for a long time. The area after the volcanic eruption was filled with sulfur and smog, and the high-temperature gas turned the rocks into clay. There was no grass for several kilometers, and it became a barren land. Seeing this desolate scenery, the Japanese couldn't help but feel fear and dare not approach it easily. Reminiscent of the hell scenes depicted in Buddhism, these places are called "hell zones", and the "hot pools" formed are called "hells". There are many hot springs in the Beppu area, and they are basically called hells. The most famous ones are the nine hot springs in Beppu, namely: Sea Hell, Onishifangzhu Hell, Kitchen Hell, Ghost Mountain Hell , White Pond Hell , Blood Pond Hell , Tornado hell .

Additional Info

Don't be fooled by the name! The Beppu hells, while called "hells" due to their otherworldly appearance, offer a captivating journey into the heart of Beppu's geothermal wonders. This volcanic region boasts a long history of spewing hot air, mud, and water, leaving behind a unique landscape. Imagine barren grounds sculpted by volcanic eruptions, steaming vents releasing puffs of sulfurous gas, and vibrant colored hot springs bubbling ominously. It's no wonder these geothermal features earned the name "hells," reminiscent of scenes from Buddhist mythology.
Beppu is a hot spring paradise, and the most famous ones are these very hells. Unlike your typical relaxing soak, the Beppu hells showcase the raw power of geothermal activity. Prepare to be mesmerized by the cobalt blue waters of the Sea Hell, chuckle at the bubbling mud pools resembling monks' heads in the Onishibozu Hell, or witness the intense heat used for traditional cooking methods at the Kitchen Hell. These are just a few of the nine famed Beppu hells, each offering a unique spectacle.  Explore the milky white waters of the White Pond Hell, be captivated by the blood-red hues of the Blood Pond Hell, or marvel at the geyser erupting every few minutes at the Tornado Hell.  A visit to the Beppu hells is more than just sightseeing; it's an experience that will leave you awestruck by the power of nature and the geothermal wonders that define this extraordinary region.
