What To Expect
Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon
Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 1880s by French colonists, is one of the few remaining strongholds of Catholicism in the largely Buddhist Vietnam. Located in Paris Square, the name Notre Dame was given after the installation of the statue ‘Peaceful Notre Dame’ in 1959. In 1962, the Vatican conferred the Cathedral status as a basilica and gave it the official name of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Measuring almost 60 metres in height, the cathedral’s distinctive neo-Romanesque features include the all-red brick façade (which were imported from Marseille), stained glass windows, two bell towers containing six bronze bells that still ring to this day, and a peaceful garden setting in the middle of downtown Ho Chi Minh City District 1.
Saigon Central Post Office
The Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh is a beautifully preserved remnant of French colonial times and perhaps the grandest post office in all of Southeast Asia. Located next door to Notre Dame Cathedral, the two cultural sites can be visited together and offers visitors a chance to imagine life in Vietnam during the times of the Indochinese Empire. The building was designed by Alfred Foulhoux and features arched windows and wooden shutters, just as it would have in its heyday in the late 19th Century.

5.00Lenny and our driver were fantastic, and we had a fun day together! Communication was easy via WhatsApp and it was easy to find Lenny at the cruise terminal. He gave us a lot of information during the 2 hr car ride into Ho Chi Minh so we could hit the ground running in the city. Since it was a private tour, we had flexibility in how long we took at each stop and what food we wanted for lunch. Everything was well organized from beginning to end. One thing to note is that it’s a busy day. There won’t be much time to rest so be prepared to see a lot!

4.00Very busy day though we did not do some of the things on the itinerary eg China town. I think it would have been infeasible. Tom was a great guide, very good knowledge of what he took us to see. Lovely Vietnamese food.

5.00Very good contact prior to the pick up at the port by an VIN our guide, who gave us the details of pick up. When we got to that point he was there with a sign, clearly anxious to meet us. As for our wishes, a customized the day took care of request for rest stops and did everything in his power to make us feel welcome in his country and his city of Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City. We saw the major sites of Ho Chi Minh City and explained every question clearly that we had asked of him. He returned us to the port on time as we had requested. We had a wonderful time with him and wished him well with his future endeavors. John Bernath
