What To Expect
Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon
Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 1880s by French colonists, is one of the few remaining strongholds of Catholicism in the largely Buddhist Vietnam. Located in Paris Square, the name Notre Dame was given after the installation of the statue ‘Peaceful Notre Dame’ in 1959. In 1962, the Vatican conferred the Cathedral status as a basilica and gave it the official name of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Measuring almost 60 metres in height, the cathedral’s distinctive neo-Romanesque features include the all-red brick façade (which were imported from Marseille), stained glass windows, two bell towers containing six bronze bells that still ring to this day, and a peaceful garden setting in the middle of downtown Ho Chi Minh City District 1.
Saigon Central Post Office
The Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh is a beautifully preserved remnant of French colonial times and perhaps the grandest post office in all of Southeast Asia. Located next door to Notre Dame Cathedral, the two cultural sites can be visited together and offers visitors a chance to imagine life in Vietnam during the times of the Indochinese Empire. The building was designed by Alfred Foulhoux and features arched windows and wooden shutters, just as it would have in its heyday in the late 19th Century.

5.00Anna was a wonderful guide. She was very responsive to our interests, while making sure we saw all the important sites. We enjoyed her knowledge of the history of Viet Nam and Saigon, as well as the cultural, political and religious elements. She fairly presented the history of the “American War” and, if anything, underplayed the atrocities os US forces. Anna brought us to the Notre Dame Cathedral, Post Office, War Remnants Museum, China Town and other sites. A highlight was our visit to a Pho Restaurant for lunch. It was wonderfully local. Anna honestly answered questions about her life, the government, the economy and life in Saigon. She is a lovely person who you can’t help but love.

5.00We had a great day with Qui and our driver, Thi. Qui was very knowledgeable and answered our many questions. He took us “behind the scenes” to see the real Ho Chi Minh City. We had a great Vietnamese lunch and the coffee was the highlight. It was a great day!

5.00Very informative and pleasant tour which ended as a private tour because this tour operator had only my husband and I as the guests in a private car with a designated driver! He waited for us with our name card at the pier even though our cruise ship was almost 30 mins late due to the ship's Customs clearance delay. He gave us historical info of various places, guided us safely through the haphazard Saigon traffic, was flexible with time at the various places we visited, and took us to a local good restaurant with authentic local cuisine. Very friendly and spoke English well. Highly recommend.
