Sitka National Historic Park
At Sitka National Historical Park, you’ll step into Alaska’s rich past while surrounded by towering totem poles, lush temperate rainforest, and a stunning coastal backdrop. Stroll the scenic totem-lined trails, where intricately carved poles tell the stories of the Tlingit people, their traditions, and their resilience. Wander through the majestic Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the world, where moss-draped trees, babbling streams, and fresh ocean air create a peaceful, awe-inspiring escape into nature. As you cross Indian River, keep an eye out for salmon swimming upstream to spawn in late summer and fall—a powerful sight showcasing Alaska’s wild beauty. At the visitor center, explore exhibits on Tlingit craftsmanship, Russian-American history, and the 1804 Battle of Sitka. Whether you're drawn to history, wildlife, or breathtaking scenery, this park is a must-visit gem!
Fortress of the Bear
At Fortress of the Bear, you’ll come face-to-face (safely!) with rescued Alaskan brown and black bears in a stunning natural setting. Unlike a zoo, this wildlife rescue and education center provides a spacious, naturalized habitat where the bears can roam, play, and interact much as they would in the wild. From elevated viewing platforms, you’ll get unobstructed, photographer-friendly views of these incredible animals while knowledgeable staff share their rescue stories, behaviors, and conservation efforts. This is more than just a viewing experience—it’s a chance to connect with Alaska’s wildlife and learn how Fortress of the Bear is giving these orphaned bears a second chance at life. A must-see for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts alike!

Ryan was our guide and he was excellent, very chill and relaxed style, very knowledgable and clearly passionate about the animals. We went to the raptor centre and bears and it was amazing to see the bears playing in the water and seeing the eagles up close. Lots of interesting facts along the way and even an impromptu whale sighting at a viewing point. The weather was also glorious so overall a fabulous day and great way to see Sitka.

Booked through Viator. Excellent pre-tour communications from the vendor. Ryan gets high marks from us as a fun, knowledgeable and flexible tour guide. Learned a lot at the Raptor and Bear rescue facilities, and Ryan shared the background stories on many of the animals. Money well spent.

Well organised, the visits to The Raptor Centre , Bear Fortress and Totem Park provided an insight to the local wildlife and to the customs of the indigenous people of Alaska. Our guide amused us with funny stories as well as going the benefit of his local knowledge. We were so pleased to have taken this tour.

Riley is knowledgeable and friendly but the tour is short. Would have liked to spend more time with the raptors and less time allotted for the park and totems as you could easily walk back to the ship on your own on your timing. Communication prior to the excursion was fantastic! Left detailed instructions and photos of where we would be picked up and also what we should wear given the weather.

Fabulous tour of beautiful Sitka, Ryan was our tour guide and he had a lot of great information to share as well as being a lot of fun. Highly recommend, easy pick up, on time from agreed location and dropped back to the cruise terminal in plenty of time for boarding the ship.

Killer visits to the bears and raptors!! A good sampling of the areas' well-know animals...anything to save those that have been harmed by man's actions.
