Though the capital of Provence and France’s 2nd-largest city, Marseille proudly grooves to its own Mediterranean beat – a mash-up of big-city grit and small-town sociability mixed with seagull squawks and scooter engines. Bookended by limestone fjords and garrigue hills, this working-class metropolis is profoundly shaped by its seaside location and its deep ties to the rest of the Mediterranean. The port has welcomed waves of goods, immigrants, and ideas since 600 B.C. Briny, boisterous, gritty and gorgeous, Marseille is a cultural crossroads in constant flux. The latest evolution was sparked in 2013, when the city reigned as Europe’s Capital of Culture. Now, France’s least-known city is finally on the map. Let us be your guide with this food tour in Marseille.

I always learn so much with Culinary Backstreets. It's not only about the food, but about the city and cultures. I will always look for a Culinary Backstreets in whichever city I'm in -- the guides are so professional and humble.

We learned so much about Marseilles as well as the wide variety of food options in Marseilles. Florence was a fabulous tour guide with broad knowledge of the food, culture, history, and art. We learned so much! We went back to several of the vendors over the following days. I definitely recommend this tour!

We had so much fun exploring Marseille with Séverine. She was extremely knowledgeable and took us to many interesting places with delicious food. It was really nice to meet the owners and staff behind the different businesses.

We loved this tour. Our guide Severine was amazing. This tour covered history, culture and of course food. This tour took us to places we would have walked past without noticing, or felt uncomfortable entering (because they were bustling and one had to know what to order). Everything we ate was delicious and had an important story. It also felt we were support local establishments that were part of each neighborhood. We will look for this company’s tours in other destinations and have them at the top of our list. We absolutely recommend this tour. Arrive hungry!

This was an outstanding tour. It teaches you the culture and history vs. seeing the historical site and taking a few pictures. I you are looking for a unique way to learn about Marseille, I would recommend taking this tour. The food we tasted was wonderful.

My husband and I took this tour with Severine. There were no other people on our tour, so it turned into a private tour. It was one of our favorite tours we have ever taken. We saw the city while gaining knowledge of the culture, people, and history. The pace was perfect. We sampled so many different types of food and drinks. She was able to modify to meet our desires. The people in the establishments knew Severine, so it was very nice to see the relationships which had been established. For people who our on a cruise ship like we were - it was easy to grab a taxi at the pier and Severine helped us get the taxi at the end. They took us directly to the ship. The total cost of the taxis was $50 Euros. I highly recommend you take this tour.

Coco was our guide on this absolutely fabulous food tour - with a smattering of history thrown in. She shared with us locally owned hidden gems from coffeehouses to street food vendors to food markets to bakeries to a chocolate shop to a spice market to a second story bar all within the Old Port of Marseille. Her knowledge of all the foods we sampled was extensive and very fun to learn while savoring every morsel and drop. I’m glad we did it the first day here because we have all the establishments we will be going back to - whatever the meal or snack. Coco gave us a little architectural history of each area while we were walking, adding just a little more flavor to our experience. After the tour she sent us other restaurants to add to our list. A most delightful day.
