A brilliant way to explore the area and see the beauty all around. You will ride across plateaus, surrounded by mountains on relatively easy grade 1-2 family friendly trails.
The recommended route follows trails all the way from Hawea, alongside the Hawea river, through Albert Town and then follows the Clutha river to Wanaka.
On your way there are lots of interesting places to visit including Lake Hawea, Pembroke Patisserie, Wanaka, the Wanaka Tree and the Edgewater Hotel garden bar.
Not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health
Suitable for all physical fitness levels

nzbiketrails luxury shuttle will pick you up from Wanaka and transport you to Hawea. We will provide an overview of the route, safety briefing and a test ride to ensure that your bike is comfortable for you with the right seat height. You will then have the rest of the day to explore the local area on your bike and make stops on the way back to Wanaka. Our favourite stop is the patisserie in Albert Town – an award-winning bakery. On arrival in Wanaka nzbiketrails will then pick up your bikes at the original pickup location by 4pm. Our e-bikes are suitable for Children 8 years+ who are over 140cm and are confident riders capable of using gears on a bike. We recommend young families book either the 0900hrs or 1030hrs shuttles allowing plenty of time to ride back to Wanaka.

We used your service not long ago to do the Dunstan trail for 2 reasons one for the trip and the other to evaluate the bikes as we were looking at purchasing. That trip was outstanding and the bikes so good we brought 2 and use them every week here in Hanmer. This visit to Wanaka with a friend, we decided to do the Hawea trip and not bother taking our bikes but use your company again. This proved to be a mistake. When dropped at Hawea we had to set up our own bikes, maybe because we were regular users, but our set up was never checked. On our previous trip this was a big part of the whole process with getting to know the bikes. We did give the bikes a quick check and all seemed "ok". At the quick track briefing another change from our last trip was no meeting up a wee way into the trip, just "call me if there's any issues" this change proved to be significant for us. Halfway along the Lake front we were all having issues with the bikes - Gear jumping - loss of power from the motor assist - suspension faults and one of the bikes had 2 complete power failures where it turned itself off going up some small inclines. As stated, we own 2 of these bikes and use them every week so we know how they should perform. So, we decided to do some serious bike checks, I adjusted all the derailers to get them to at least change without jumping, this worked on 2 of the bikes the one I was using refused to not jump when loaded. The chains were all very, very dry this did not help the gear issues. All the seat knuckle suspension joints appeared locked and refused to rotate as they should, this gave us all a rough ride. The front forks on the bike I had would go down when loaded but would not return unless the front wheel was lifted from the ground, again this made for a jarring ride, the other bikes front forks were similar but not as bad as the bike I was using. The motor assist issues remained and refused to function as they should which resulted us putting the bikes into High assist and using the gears to assist the motor. We were all very grateful the track was relatively flat. We did consider calling for help but the time frames and the lack of any replacement bikes to us meant the day would be a write off (At this point if we had had a meeting like our first trip it may have been resolved) For us the bikes have been poorly maintained and were only a shadow of the bikes when new, a far cry from the vision explained to us during our first use of your company. At the pick-up point we started going thru some of the issues, but I felt we were not taken seriously so we walked away to have a beer and then a hot soak to relieve the joint stress we all had. Again, we own 2 off these bikes and know how good they are but what was supplied for this trip very substandard and poor.

This was one of the best things we’ve done in our journey of the South Island. Our guide, Max, was super helpful and took great care in explaining the trail and how to operate the e-bikes. He even met us a few kms into our journey to make sure we had a handle of the bikes. The scenery was stunning and we came across hidden little gems that we would otherwise not have seen. The e-bikes made the ride easy, while still doing a bit of a workout. The half way stop in Albert Town at the little patisserie for lunch was perfect, and the food delicious! We will be recommending this activity to all our friends.

What an incredible experience. The views were absolutely breathtaking with diverse sceneries. We absolutely loved this activity. The E bikes made the 30km ride feel like a breeze. Tristan and James were a delight and provided great recommendations for the trip as well as making us comfortable for the ride. Would highly recommended.

This is great experience. Would highly recommend the e-bikes as it is not “easy” - left my bike in eco mode and still had a good workout. Incredible views and a really great way to spend an afternoon in Wānaka. I did this on my travel day - we got into Wanaka around 11am and we got picked up at 1230 right in the center of town. Great way to spend the afternoon- we finished around 4 and then our room was ready to it worked out perfectly. You are a basically on your own so you can go at your own pace. We stopped multiple times and got some great pictures and hung by the streams and rivers. Wish i had a bathing suit with me as it was very tempting to jump in.

We had a great time today with beautiful scenery along the way. The ride was fairly easy as regular riders but the e-bikes made the climbs so much easier than our normal bikes at home. James gave us a great run down of the route prior to us setting off on our self guided tour

I am so pleased I booked this bike trip from Lake Hawea to Wanaka. It was stunningly beautiful, not too difficult, and the tour guide Tristan was great.
