Bahia Bioluminiscente
This excursion is located on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. In order to participate in our tour, an overnight stay on Vieques is required. Vieques is a separate island off of the main island of Puerto Rico. You will need to take a plane or ferry from the main island of Puerto Rico to reach Vieques, and you will need to arrange separate ground transportation because you will not be able to bring a rental car on the ferry with you. Because we only offer tours at night so that our clients can experience the glow of the bay, even if you take our earliest tour, you will not be back to our meeting point with enough time to get on a ferry or a plane back to the main island on the same day. Our guides will meet you in Esperanza directly across from Rainbow Realty (278 Calle Flamboyan). Roundtrip from the meeting point, the excursion is 2 hours, time on the bay about 1.5 hours, weather permitting. We provide transportation from the meeting point to the Bio Bay entrance and back.

Thankfully the locals know the meet-up locations because there isn't any signage, just a van with a guy and a clipboard hanging out in a parking lot. I picked this specific tour because the description indicated time in the water was 60-75 minutes; not true it was closer to 45 minutes because we waited on late arrivals. Hmmm is that fair? However, because there were no fish jumping and the water was only illuminated by the kayak paddles, the tour length was okay. Shoes are removed after arrival at the lagoon parking lot, but walking barefoot in the dark across a gravel lot can be challenging. Then there's about 20' of ankle-deep mud to cross. Feet are washed off back at the meet-up location once the tour concludes. Our guide did a good job keeping us together but it was difficult to hear his voice once the kayaks spread out. He was especially hard to hear while in the van. There were 9 in our group and that was plenty! It would have been helpful if the guide could have suggested how to adjust phones for pictures or perhaps even taken pictures for us. The 10-minute window of free time was largely spent trying to avoid ramming other kayaks because clearly some in the group didn't have a clue how to kayak! IMHO, I think arriving at the lagoon even 15 minutes before it gets dark would allow time for basic kayak instruction and allow guests to adjust to surroundings, etc. It really is very, very dark by 7:30pm, and phone flashlights are inadequate. Participants should use red lights so eyes don't have to constantly readjust. There were no bugs and the guide never talked about the adverse effects of using bug dope.....All in all, it was an interesting experience but certainly didn't look anything like the promotional pictures. I definitely wouldn't go to Vieques just for the bioluminescence experience but if you're already going to Vieques, then take a bio tour.

The bay is amazing. The tour itself left much to be desired. Our guide led us out, gave us a brief talk and then told us we could paddle around for 20 minutes as we wished and then left us to find our own way back in the dark.

Our tour guide Alex is very good at telling us the made of bio glow. The glow is not like the photo in the ads, but still special to see them like flowing stars in the sea. Alex also showed me a lot of constellations in the sky with the story of the names behind them, which is impressive. Enjoyed a tour overall!

There are many tour operators offering biobay tours and I chose this company because it had the high reviews on the viator website. Unfortunately I strongly regret that decision, especially after seeing how much more organized and professional the other tour companies appeared once we arrived. From the start the experience felt underwhelming. We were picked up in a very worn down van while other groups were arriving in proper buses, which immediately set a negative tone. What I disliked most about this tour was the guide. Once we got into the water, he essentially sent the group out and then left us on our own. While I understand that darkness is necessary to see the bioluminescence, the lack of guidance, visibility, and supervision felt unsafe. There were no glow sticks or clear markers and the guide was not nearby to assist or monitor the kayakers. This made the experience stressful rather than enjoyable, especially for those who were less confident on the water. Overall the tour felt poorly managed and lacking in basic safety considerations. Given the number of other operators available, I would strongly encourage travelers to explore other options before booking this one.

They charge my credit card twice and no one is responding to my emails. I've reached out to them twice with no response.

Educational and fun experience. Tour was punctual. Easy paddling. Guide (Arnaldo) was very attentive and provided a lot of info on bioluminescence and the night sky.

The Bio Bay experience is amazing. We had 2 parents and kids 12 and 10. There are lots of tours/experiences for this bay - we selected this tour for the price. If we had to select again we would select another. The guide could have been a little more informative on what to expect and about the bay. The ride there was silence with no information. Equipment and kayaks were great and the Bio Bay was amazing, but you don't get much else.

5 stars for our tour guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable—we learned so much from him, and he really made the experience engaging and memorable. Overall, the tour was a very cool and unique experience. That said, I agree with other reviews that the meeting spot wasn’t very obvious, even though we were given the address. We were quite worried about missing the tour because of this. There was also a small hiccup with the secondary guide/booking that caused a delay in getting started. As for the bioluminescent bay, it wasn’t as bright as I had expected or as it appears in photos—likely because it was just a couple of days after the full moon (even though it was cloudy). Still, we were able to see faint bioluminescence in the water, which was really special and worth experiencing.

Lots of fun. There are a dozen or so companies doing these tours in Esperanza. We found these guys on TripAdvisor and while it seemed a little fly-by-night at first it worked out great. They sent us texts where to meet through Viator. They got us to the best parts of the bay as promised. They ensured everyone survived the adventure and they taught us quite a bit about the phenomenon as well. I wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again.
