Visiting from Europe, we wanted to experience one of the old plantations while we were in the area. We chose Boone Hall because of my love for “North and South”, and overall we enjoyed the visit. All the employees we encountered were very friendly and helpful. However, we were very disappointed in the “shallow” approach to the darker side of the history of these plantations. Our expectation was to learn more about the history of slavery, and how brutal this period of time was for the poor people involved, especially as a contrast to the plantation owners and the lifestyle they could enjoy because of their use of slave labor. Our family travels a lot, and we have been to numerous historical sites in different countries, but I think this was the most unbalanced presentation we have ever encountered when considering the history behind these plantations. We found the price to be a bit high for what you get, and maybe a slight discount for families could be a way to go.

Fantastic experience. Be prepared to walk a lot. Make sure you go to all of the talks. You learn so much!

It is well guided with short tours of the main floor of the house, a tractor pulled ride through the property, and an owners tal regarding the people who have owned a lived there. There is also a talk about the enslaved people and the Gullah culture that we missed but were told was also very good. The gardens are beautiful, the live oak aisle is amazing, all the guides are entertaining and friendly. There’s a very nice cafe nd gift shop on cute, plenty of restrooms, and you have to freedom to explore the grounds at you own pace.

Taking the free tour was very worth our time. We ran out of time to hear the slave cabin lecture, but seeing their living conditions was very sobering.

The only downside was that I thought the tour started at eight and it actually started at nine. It was wonderfully informative. The Gullah Geeche presentation was incredible.

Mostly outside experience so plan accordingly. Still a working farm. Ask questions as staff are very knowledgeable.
