Cape Coast Castle
The Cape Coast Castle is one of the biggest castles still standing in Ghana today which was constructed by European forces, On a portion of the Gold Coast that subsequently came to be known as the Cape Coast, it all started as a Portuguese trade lodge built in 1555. The Swedish Africa Company built a permanent wooden stronghold in 1653 to facilitate the trading of gold and lumber after Sweden conquered the Cape Coast. The regional office of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board is located there, and it is currently a historical museum with a gift shop selling Ghanaian arts and crafts.
Elmina Castle
So Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine) was the name given to Elmina Castle by the Portuguese in 1482 when they erected it in Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast). Elmina and Elmina Castle is the oldest European structure still standing below the Sahara because it was the first trading post ever constructed on the Gulf of Guinea. It was initially founded as a trading colony but eventually developed into one of the most significant sites along the path of the Atlantic slave trade. A significant portion of Werner Herzog's 1987 drama film "Cobra Verde" was filmed at Elmina Castle, which is now a well-known historical landmark. It serves as a stark reminder of the history of the slave trade and is a very sought-after destination for African American travelers hoping to connect with their heritage.

It was an amazing experience…. The logistics were spot on, the guides (Wisdom and Emanuel) were really sweet, informative and professional… the tour takes the whole day and the drive is certainly long but really worth it given the importance of the castles visited. The canopy walk was a real treat!

The trip was well organized and the team communicated well before and during the trip. Wisdom was an excellent driver and guide in more ways than one. He was so encouraging with my mom as we made our way up the Kakum trail- She couldn’t have done it without him!

Good trip but the bad roads made it really long and tiring. It was a 13 hour long trip and of that we spent about 9 hours on the van so about 3 hours to actually see things. Also the price range is quite different for people depending if they were able to find a discount or not. The guide was great and I liked that there were people in each spot who gave us a tour with information.

The tour was great and my husband and I would highly recommend! Our driver (Daniel) was very friendly and knowledgeable. The pickup was easy to organize and he arrived on time. The drive was long but worth it once we got to the sites. Daniel was an expert level driver, especially with the heavy traffic and through the bumpy construction zone. The castles were very informative and the canopy walk at the national park was excellent!

A good experience with very good tour guides. Transport was in a people carrier for 4hrs there and 4hrs 30mins back. Very uncomfortable for a 6ft man even though we stopped off after an hour and a half on the way there. We didn't stop for 4hrs 30mins on the way back and my knees were aching as a result. We wasn't offered a toilet break either.

The entire experience was amazing including our tour guide. We did run into a bit of a hiccup which was a tire blowout but all the men on the tour bus all worked together to help the bus driver change it swiftly and we were back on the road. This is an ALL DAY tour so please don’t plan to do anything else with your day because you will be picked up early and get back to your location late. Overall we had a wonderful time.

Excellent tour - both educational and fun. Highly recommend. Emmanuel did a great job tending to the needs of our group. If you want to learn African history and have a thrilling adventure at the park, this is for you. It is a long day.

My wife and I enjoyed the hell out of this experience, which was alternately breathtaking, beautiful, and intense (not physically). The scenery is incredible, and the guide and driver did a wonderful job of narrating about the areas we drove through as well as the sites on the itinerary. The sites dealing with the history of slavery are powerful and I find it hard to believe any visitor - especially Americans like us - could visit without being affected. Be aware that this is a lot of driving, probably close to 5 hours in the van cumulatively. Small children (there were two in our tour group) may have their patience tested. Honestly this is more of an "adults" thing - kids will like the National Park with the jungle canopy walk, but the historical sites will be hard for really small kids to appreciate I believe. That said, a young boy on the tour of Elmina Castle asked the guide, "Did my ancestors have to stay here" and, well, everyone was pretty choked up at that. Crowds are present at all of these sites. Nothing unmanageable, nothing overwhelming, but be aware that these are all popular things to see - by locals as wel as tourists like me. Go. Do it.
