Cape Coast Castle
The Cape Coast Castle is one of the biggest castles still standing in Ghana today which was constructed by European forces, On a portion of the Gold Coast that subsequently came to be known as the Cape Coast, it all started as a Portuguese trade lodge built in 1555. The Swedish Africa Company built a permanent wooden stronghold in 1653 to facilitate the trading of gold and lumber after Sweden conquered the Cape Coast. The regional office of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board is located there, and it is currently a historical museum with a gift shop selling Ghanaian arts and crafts.
Elmina Castle
So Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine) was the name given to Elmina Castle by the Portuguese in 1482 when they erected it in Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast). Elmina and Elmina Castle is the oldest European structure still standing below the Sahara because it was the first trading post ever constructed on the Gulf of Guinea. It was initially founded as a trading colony but eventually developed into one of the most significant sites along the path of the Atlantic slave trade. A significant portion of Werner Herzog's 1987 drama film "Cobra Verde" was filmed at Elmina Castle, which is now a well-known historical landmark. It serves as a stark reminder of the history of the slave trade and is a very sought-after destination for African American travelers hoping to connect with their heritage.

It was a great day out! The visit to the 3 sites was well worth the money. Communitation with the tour company (Expedition Tour - Elizabeth) was very smooth. She was very responsive. The driver (Wisdom) was excelent - great interpersonal skills. Very professional, very caring and patient! The restaurant where we stopped for lunch served the most delicious Ghanaian meals and inexpensive. The tour guides are very pasionate about their work. The information was delivered with such conviction, it was very vivid and very moving. A historical tour! I strongly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Ghana. Its a must!

We loved the experience. Our driver/guide Patrick was hospitable and super helpful. The tour of both castles was enlightening and very heavy. It’s definitely an experience you will remember. The canopy tour is challenging. Lots of steps and uneven pathways uphill. Wear good footwear and bring insect repellents.

The drive to / from Accra was very long, but the end result was worth it. The guides in the two castles visited were knowledgable and provided excellent information. I found the canopy walk at Kakum National Park challenging and our guide / driver Wisdom was great and helped me along the way. I would highly recommend this trip - but be prepared for long drives on rough and unpaved roads.

Super professional company - communication was great, our driver was prompt, kind, and very knowledgeable. Vehicle was in great condition with a/c and water was provided (1 bottle per person). Our driver went above and beyond to make us comfortable and teach us about Ghana, something I personally find very admirable and it adds to our overall experience in the country. Highly recommend this company and would absolutely book with them again.

We had an absolutely amazing time on the tour. Touring these castles is a reminder that we are the descendants of those who refused to die. We are the legacy of people who endured the unthinkable. It is a journey that left us feeling raw and hollowed out, yet strangely fortified. We walked out of those gates carrying their stories, ensuring that while they were forced through a door of "no return," their spirit finally has returned —through us. We also enjoyed the Kakum National Park. The lunch was delicious and I enjoyed the 8 suspension bridges. What no-one mentioned was that there were 87 steps that we had to climb along with the steep incline to ascend the hill. It was challenging but we felt accomplished when we completed the tour.

It was an amazing experience…. The logistics were spot on, the guides (Wisdom and Emanuel) were really sweet, informative and professional… the tour takes the whole day and the drive is certainly long but really worth it given the importance of the castles visited. The canopy walk was a real treat!

The trip was well organized and the team communicated well before and during the trip. Wisdom was an excellent driver and guide in more ways than one. He was so encouraging with my mom as we made our way up the Kakum trail- She couldn’t have done it without him!

Good trip but the bad roads made it really long and tiring. It was a 13 hour long trip and of that we spent about 9 hours on the van so about 3 hours to actually see things. Also the price range is quite different for people depending if they were able to find a discount or not. The guide was great and I liked that there were people in each spot who gave us a tour with information.
