Horse racing first became popular in Barbados back in the 19th century, at a time when horses were the main means of transport. The Garrison is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison & once Britain’s largest military installation in the Eastern Caribbean.

Watching the horses race on the beautiful green turf is a highlight for some, others prefer to enjoy watching these beautiful race horses take their morning sea bath and exercise on Pebbles Beach.

On this excursion, you will be picked up from your hotel to take you around the Garrison pointing out historical landmarks & sights like the Main Guard & the house where George Washington stayed on his visit to Barbados as a young man. You will then make your way to Pebbles beach to watch the horses swim & play.

After watching the horses, you will make your way to Savvy On The Bay to enjoy a tasty breakfast. After breakfast relax on the beach where a sun lounger & shared umbrella await you.

Garrison

From 1655 large fleets of British ships and soldiers were visiting and Barbados making it there base of operation. In 1780 it was decided by the British Government to station a permanent garrison on the island. It was eventually decided that the Garrisons should be built. The Garrison in Barbados is in fact the largest in the Caribbean. Many of the buildings were constructed of London brick brought out as ballast in ships which returned with sugar. Some 60 of the original buildings are still in existence today. The Savannah of itself was a very rocky area where many crabs lived. It had to be filled in and leveled for the troops to practice on. It was also the birthplace of cricket in Barbados and today serves as the islands racetrack. On November 30th 1966 Barbados was led into Independence by the then Premier Errol Walton Barrow, officially celebrating the achievement of nationhood as a sovereign and independent state within the Commonwealth

Pebbles Beach

Pebbles beach lies on the southern end of Carlisle Bay. Carlisle is a nice tranquil beach located just on the outskirts of Bridgetown, where the focal point is the bobbing boats moored in the bay. It is a vast area of mostly placid and clear waters with no undertow, and is excellent for photos, snorkeling and Scuba diving, while boasting the most visited dive sites in Barbados. It is also well known as the place in Barbados where the race horses take their morning swim.

  • A mixed experience

Quite a mixed experience. From a positive perspective, the team members that looked after us were all super friendly and helpful. Seeing the horses in the water was also very special. But, I appreciate outside the direct control of the trip organisers, be aware that the beach area where the horses are is also occupied by several very ‘entrepreneurial’ locals who offer rides on other horses; they are pretty pushy and were openly smoking weed. Not ideal. The beach area that we finished at was busy but pleasant and there is a decent bar with a range of good food outlets if you want lunch.

  • Awesome activity

Great activity to book. We were taken on a short historic tour and then to Pebbles Beach to meet the horses. The prices to ride the horses are separate from the trip and varies from $25USD to $40USD but the guys would work with you if you can’t afford it. After that we were driven to Savvy on the Bay for free breakfast and then taken to our lounge chairs and umbrella on Brown Beach to relax on the beach. You are entitled to a free drink as well. The shuttle leaves at 11:10am and 1:10pm to take you back to your hotel when you’re ready to depart. Well worth it!
