Founded in 1865 by the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana Free and Accepted Masons, the Masonic Cemetery expresses a character distinct from the Catholic cemeteries that dominate the city. It is known for its many unusual, elaborate tombs, a reputation due in part to the cemetery’s communal nature: members of lodges pooled resources to purchase large group tombs. Occupying two oddly shaped city blocks, the cemetery is triangular in plan, with Conti Street bisecting it. The triangular footprint of the bordering streets overlaid with the cemetery’s angular internal walkways mimics the Masonic emblem of the square and compass. Cast-iron picket fences enclose its two distinct sections, while oak allées line its northern and western edges. Tombs are compactly arranged in rows parallel to Bienville Street, with a wide, paved promenade cutting through the center to provide access to smaller walkways between rows.
City Park
City Park is as magical and unique as the city of New Orleans. The 1,300-acre outdoor oasis has enchanted New Orleanians since 1854, making it one of the nation’s oldest urban parks. Each year, millions of visitors stroll under the same historic oaks and picturesque moss canopies that served as the backdrop for dances, concerts and even gentlemanly duels or “affaires d’honneur” for generations.

This was our last night in Nee Orleans, and we decided it wouldn’t be right to leave without visiting a cemetery. Our guide made the ride to the cemetery fun and set the mood with music. He shared lots of interesting stories and traditions that we wouldn’t have known if we had gone on our own.

Roy was an awesome and very funny guide. The tour was entertaining and informative, with great music. He talked about the history of NOLA cemeteries and burial practices, along with some true crime stories and haunted places. Roy being a former paranormal investigator was an added bonus and even included some ghost hunting equipment for the cemetery walk. I definitely recommend this tour if you’re looking for an experience that’s both spooky and fun.

Several people who had purchased tickets for the nighttime cemetery bus tour, including my wife and I, arrived at the designated meeting location at the instructed time. According to the company's website: “TOUR DEPARTS NIGHTLY FROM ST. PHILIP STREET (VOODOO TAVERN & POBOYS) TOUR TIME: 5PM, 8PM & 11PM (SEASONAL) PLEASE ARRIVE 30 MINUTES BEFORE DEPARTURE.” After some confusion, as we found no Voodoo Tavern & Poboys, it was determined that the correct meeting location was the red ticket booth at 1140 Decatur Street, at the corner of Decatur and St. Philip Streets near Landry's Restaurant. Once there, our group waited approximately twenty minutes before the bus arrived carrying the previous tour group. The guide, Dave, stepped off the bus, took roll, and began explaining the evening's itinerary. During his introduction, he informed us that we would be taking a break at 8:00 p.m. Several guests politely pointed out that it was already approximately 9:20 p.m. Rather than simply correcting himself, he responded sharply, stating, “Don't interrupt me while I am talking.” It was an unnecessarily hostile response that immediately set a negative tone for the evening. Several people appeared surprised by his reaction, and my wife and I decided at that point that his attitude would be reflected in any tip we might have otherwise given. As we boarded the bus, Dave announced that we would wait until 9:35 p.m. for any late arrivals. The driver then informed him that it was already 9:35 p.m., he said, “OK. Let’s go.” at which point we finally departed. Our first stop was the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Dave described it as a special location that he could only reveal once we entered because he had been granted access through a close friend associated with the organization. He then launched into an extended discussion of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, explaining that members who could not join traditional guilds created their own organization. During this presentation, Dave stated that bodies placed in the above-ground vaults would eventually be reduced to dust because temperatures inside the compartments could reach 350 degrees Fahrenheit. This claim is simply inaccurate. A quick verification through Google Gemini confirms that a body exposed to sustained temperatures around 350 degrees Fahrenheit would not gradually turn to dust. Instead, the remains would dehydrate and mummify, with soft tissues drying out and natural decomposition slowing significantly. While I understand that tour guides often simplify historical information, presenting inaccurate facts as established truth is misleading. Dave also described the Odd Fellows as being among the highest and most influential secret societies, including claims regarding Freemasonry. I am a Master Mason, although I did not disclose that fact during the tour. As he continued speaking about Freemasonry, he presented numerous assertions regarding Masonic beliefs, degree work, and practices that were entirely incorrect. Rather than creating an uncomfortable situation for the rest of the group by publicly challenging him, I chose to remain silent. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the evening was spent in this cemetery listening to lengthy speeches that often-contained questionable information while providing relatively few verifiable historical facts. Questions from guests were frequently met with sarcasm rather than enthusiasm. Additionally, despite repeatedly stressing the importance of respecting the deceased, Dave never corrected or discouraged guests who sat on the low walls surrounding burial sites. The bus transportation itself was also concerning. The driver made frequent lane changes that felt unnecessarily aggressive and, at one point, appeared to proceed through a red traffic signal. Not a yellow light turning red, but a light that was already red. The overall impression was that there was an urgency to reach the next cemetery that simply was not warranted. In the end, I cannot recommend this tour. Visitors seeking a nighttime cemetery bus experience would likely be better served by taking the Haunted History bus tour instead. While that tour is not perfect, our experience was that it focused more on historical information, treated guests respectfully, and maintained a more professional atmosphere throughout the evening.

Our tour guide, Raffle was amazing! He was so knowledgeable and had so many interesting facts. The price was reasonable and the tour was a tad over 2 hours. I would highly recommend this tour. And if you are lucky enough to have Raffle as your guide, it will be even better.
