What To Expect
Mae Chan
Mae Chan is a town and a district (amphoe) in the northern part of Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand. Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Mae Sai. Chiang Saen, Doi Luang. Mueang Chiang Rai and Mae Fa Luang of Chiang Rai Province.
Akha Hill Tribe
he Akha, also known to the Thai as the Gaw or the E-gaw (names that the Akha do not like), are located primarily with Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai province. The Akha are closely related with the Hani of Yunnan province, China, the Akha-Hani complex numbers about two to three million people, but with just over 70,000 members in Thai territory. The Akha speak a language in the Lolo/Yi branch of the Tibeto-Burman language group, but have no traditional written language. There are a variety of schemes for writing Akha developed by missionaries or linguists which employ Roman, Thai or Burmese characters, but literacy in Akha is still virtually nil. The Akha are traditionally subsistence farmers, growing a variety of crops including rice and corn.

5.00We had a wonderful private tour with Guide Kong Lo, he was very knowledgeable and pointed out many things along the way. Loved the visit to the Long Neck Karen and other tribes. So very interesting. The weaving they do is beautiful. The tea plantation was very interesting and the trip to the boarder town and golden triangle was the highlight for us…..learning about the Opium trade ❤️ It was a full long day but worth it. Definitely recommend this tour.

5.00This tour was excellent. Kong la was a brilliant guide. He was engaging and thorough, stopped for plenty of photo opportunities, and suggested short, interesting walks. When my partner fell sick during the tour, he took us to a clinic and helped us communicate with the staff. He was honestly so kind and patient--it was an excellent experience and we'd book with this tour company again in a heartbeat.

5.00Individualized attention with a busy, very full day. Sandy provided almost continuous narration and insight. Thoroughly enjoyed our 9 hour day visiting Hill Tribe Villages, tea plantation, lunch stop, Mae Sai skywalk and Golden Triangle/Opium Museum.

5.00Both the tour and our guide Benja were excellent. She had a lot of knowledge regarding the places we went. She provided history , local information, translations and recommendations of ways to further our exploration of northern Thailand. Really enjoyed the Hill Tribes and Golden Triangle. We did a fast boat ride on the Mekong as an extra. Benja’s driving was safe, and her vehicle comfortable. She had a great personality and was easy to talk to about things not directly related to the tour. Highly recommend the tour and Benja (Chiangrai Big Smile Tours) in particular.

5.00Our guide and driver took us to visit a beautiful tea plantation, a border town for shopping, lunch and a boat ride at the golden triangle, an opium museum, and tribal village. We had a great day with a friendly, accommodating guide and driver. If we did it again I would ask to spend more time at the tea plantation and tribal village, and less time at the border town.
