Transportation to/from Glacier Discovery Center
Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre
No trip to Jasper is complete without a visit to the famed Columbia Icefield, the largest ice field in the Canadian Rockies. Jaw-dropping views of towering mountains, rocks, ice and pure white snow as far as the eye can see. From the Discovery Centre, you will board a specialized Ice Explorer that will take you down a frozen roadway to the Athabasca Glacier. Along the way, your driver will provide commentary about glaciers, their impact upon the local ecosystem, and the environmental changes rapidly transforming these massive scenic wonders. Once you reach the Athabasca Glacier, you will have the opportunity to hop out, walk along the glacier and even fill up your water bottle with pure, pristine snowmelt. Once the tour is complete, you will head over to the Glacier Skywalk, where you will walk along the glass bottom walkway out over the cliff's edge. After stopping to appreciate the incredible view and capture a few photographs, it's back to the Discovery Center.

It’s a great experience! Kate was our Ice Explorer driver and was very knowledgeable and engaging. Wear shoes that are water proof or water resistant because high traffic areas of the glacier are slushy.

It was a must do experience if you have never walked on a glacier. Even though you are hopping from bus to Ice Explorer to bus, it was very well organized. The skywalk gives you a nice perspective over the canyon.

Informative with a climate change, slant and no mention of God‘s creation. Fascinating to see that large pack of ice.

This really felt like a waste of time compared to everything else that you can do in Banff/Jasper. It looks really cool but the most fun part was riding in the explorer vehicle. The discovery centre is very nice so I will give them that but the whole glacier walk experience was very disappointing (especially for the price). We got about 25 minutes on the slushy mess of an about 25/30 square yards area (you are not supposed to go beyond the barrier for safety, all good) that is heavily manicured (think Sonic ice if you’re from America). The busses are packed full with people and were HOT. They did not have the air conditioning on and we were sweating on the bus. The sky walk was ok - it’s cool to see the engineering marvel of the structure but it is just so busy that it’s hard to enjoy. We cruised right through it and continued on our tour citing this experience as one of the least favorites of our extensive trip and one that we would not re-visit nor recommend to our friends.
