Our guide Hugo was very knowledgeable and our afternoon was very enjoyable. I would recommend this to everyone visiting Melbourne not just for the first time, but to anyone that has not really seen Melbourne as a local.

Nice walk with interesting facts about Melbourn. The beer at the end hit the spot. Great first day activity to get you oriented to the east side of the CBD.

There is no better way to see a city than immersing yourself in a local tour. One of the great tours that can accomplish this is the Ultimate Melbourne Walking Tour: History, Laneways & Culture with Ian. On Friday, December 5, 2025, I had the opportunity to join this great walking tour and learn about the city of Melbourne. The tour meets in the park across from The Hotel Windsor. The address will be listed as, Gordon Reserve, 74-108 Spring St, East Melbourne VIC 3002, Australia. Look for the tour guide holding a “Depot umbrella.” Based on the size of the group, you may be split into two groups. Once that occurs you are off for the tour. The tour will highlight the historical buildings of Melbourne. I enjoyed hearing about the Treasury building and bank buildings that were used to store gold. The tour also shows the historical architecture of the arcades. For some of you, an arcade may look like a mall, but believe it or not, they have a historical history! The highlights of the tour includes an opportunity to get a coffee for which Melbourne is known for. If you don’t drink coffee, then you can substitute for a cup of tea. The end of the tour is at a local restaurant for a final beverage and you have the chance to order food to wrap up your day. Throughout the tour, Ian did a great job to highlight the key components of each stop. The street art is a key part of Melbourne and his knowledge of this will help you fully understand the history. The tour brings you to several popular alleys where you will find several people taking in all the street art and you will not want to miss out on this art display. This is a great way to see the iconic AC/DC murals as well. Overall the tour is easy for walking, but keep in mind it is a walking tour. Prior to embarking on the tour consider bringing some water and if weather is threatening a small umbrella for your journey.

Hugo was a wealth of knowledge and passion for his city. He brought the city to life for us and it set up our stay in Melbourne to be more delightful than I could have imagined. Best way to start our trip to Melbourne, as we were introduced the the laneway culture and a lot of fun history and local lore. After our tour we felt ready to explore the city deeper and understand more the highlights Hugo gave us in our tour. Highly recommend.

Beau was very knowledgeable and entertaining. He showed and explained highlights at each stop and engaged with everyone. It was a fun entertaining tour. A little history, a little culture and great information. Would definitely recommend to first timers to Melbourne and those with limited time. The Laneways were fantastic.

Hugo was a FANTASTIC tour guide, as a Melbourne local, he knows this city like the back of his hands. From fascinating facts about the history of the city to recommending plenty of places to visit, he made the three hours fly by so fast. If you want an in-depth walking adventure and learn a lot about Melbourne culture, I would definitely recommend booking this tour!

If there is one trip to do whilst in Melbourne, it’s this one! Mike our guide was excellent and so proud to share his home-city with everyone on the tour. It’s nice that it’s a small tour (no more than 12 guests) and the timing is spot on - and you get in 5,000+ steps in! Thanks Mike - keep up that positivity!
