Discover Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta are 2 things to do in Ho Chi Minh City

- Located over 50km from Ho Chi Minh city, Cu Chi is now considered a heroic district for its role in the anti American war in Vietnam. It is legendary for Original tunnels system of 250km and is a popular spot for both Vietnamese and foreign visitors.

- Mekong Delta is known as The Nine Dragon river delta since it is formed by nine rivers. The background of this area is the largest site of endless paddy rice fields, coconut farms, tropical fruit gardens. It is very easy for you to catch sight of children riding on the back of the water buffaloes and farmers working on the fields.

  • Long Day -- Hang In There -- It's Worth It!

Crawling through the tunnel was the highlight of my trip and at age 55, no small feat. I have an artificial knee, so crawling wasn't an option. I had to bend over (and was able to make it for about 2/5 of the distance, but then the area became so cramped I had to sit on my bum and scoot. This made some people behind me upset because I was going slow (ironically, the only person upset was a Vietnamese tour guide who was incredibly rude and kept telling me to exit the tunnel). However, people in front of me were going slow also, so it wasn't just me. There are unexpected stops along the trip -- just go with it and enjoy it all. Be aware there's a shooting range at the Cu Chi Tunnels. Not appropriate for those with PTSD as the shooting is continuous throughout the entire visit. There's no warning so be advised.

We booked a tour with a maximum group total of 12 and ended up in a combined tour group of approximately 20, the first part of the tour ran on schedule however when our group splintered off onto 2 buses our driver (who didn’t speak English though we booked an English speaking tour) became lost and we ended up doing the Meeking Delta tour after dark, the other group however made it on time to see the delta before dark, our group paid the price for poor organisation and the lack of a back up plan for unforseen circumstances.

I didn't like catacombs too much and way it has been presented by our tour guide. Also the background noises of shutings. We were sharing 1 tour guide with another group and waiting double time until last of the shutters finished. Didn’t like very political presentation of historical facts re Vietnamese war. That not to argue on facts but to critic way of the introduction as 70% of his presentation was his subjective emotional notes.

Overall, this tour was enjoyable and engaging, but there were a few issues that need attention. First, there was a mix-up at the start. My ticket was for 7 adults and 2 children. After booking, I requested to add 2 more adults and received confirmation from the tour operator that it was fine and to pay the guide for the extra seats. However, when we were picked up at the hotel, the tour guide only had us down as a group of 7 and had no record of the additional 2 guests. Since the van had 13 seats, there were 3 extra people, so one of the children had to sit on our lap. Fortunately, this was resolved during the first stop when one of the passengers was moved to another van. The second issue was with the tour guide's English. He struggled to communicate clearly, making it difficult for all 13 of us to understand him. We were expecting a fluent English-speaking guide, but his skills were inadequate. The visit to the Cu Chi tunnels was fascinating, and I have no complaints about that part of the tour—it’s definitely worth seeing. However, lunch was another challenge. We were rushed, with only half an hour to eat and use the bathroom before heading to the Mekong Delta. The food was tasty, but the service was lacking. Meals were served family-style, and finding an available table was difficult because the previous guests' tables were not cleared in time. We had to go to the second level to find a table, and if we wanted drinks, we had to go to the first level to buy them. This was not communicated to us beforehand. The drive to the Mekong Delta was over two hours, but it was fascinating to observe how people live and adapt to life on the river. The boat ride was enjoyable, and the scenery was stunning. They served us delicious fruit and tea, and local women sang for us, which was a nice touch. However, the pressure to tip was uncomfortable. While I don’t mind tipping, the way it was handled felt overly aggressive and detracted from the experience. If these issues were addressed, I would rate this tour 5 stars.
