The surprise of this day trip was the in depth history lesson we received from our guide, Phong. Phong spoke English extremely well and all information was conveyed with enthusiasm and, where appropriate, a good dose of humour. A knowledgeable young man, it was a pleasure to have him lead us for the day. The tour involved a fair bit of driving but we were all made comfortable and it was actually a good excuse to rest. All the stops on the itinerary were handled efficiently and without fuss. Plenty of food and drinks were provided to sustain us for the duration of the tour. The main meal, fruit selection and honey tea were all very nice. If you are game, you can try wine that is made by infusing scorpions and snakes amongst plant roots and other things! My husband tried it and is still alive to tell the tale! The group size was 6 and enabled us to move easily through the crowds and stops, a great incentive to book this size over larger group tours. It also meant we were able to ride in 1 electric buggy together on the tour so we always had the guide on hand. We found this tour to be good value for money for what we got out of the day. Side note: The firing range at the tunnels was a bit underwhelming. There was limited instruction, it was hard to tell where the bullets hit and you were rushed. You have to buy a min 10 bullets and it’s definitely a tourist trap. This is optional though so it was personal choice to participate. If it’s not high on your list of priorities, I’d recommend skipping this bit.

After an early pick up and long drive to the Cu Chi tunnels it was worth it. The early start meant we missed the crowds which made our visit less rushed. Phuc, our tour guide, was very friendly and informative not only regarding the tunnels and the war but Vietnam in general. After finishing the tunnels we headed for a local restaurant for a flavoursome lunch. It didn’t disappoint. Onto the Mekong Delta where we rafted through small canals, explored a local village, sampled fruits, chocolate and wines and some of us were brave enough to say hello to a python. Enjoyed a tuk tuk ride through local laneways and sampled locally made sweets before the ride home. Great day out. Lots of driving but loved every minute.

James (Duy) was the best tour guide I’ve ever had out of any tour. He’s very knowledgeable and funny and kept us entertained throughout the entire day with us. He made sure we were able to do everything we wanted and gave us plenty of time to enjoy. He was even our personal photographer throughout the tour! I would definitely recommend him to everybody!
