What To Expect
Simien Mountains National Park
We will meet you in the morning at Gondar Airport or your hotel in Gondar. Drive from Gondar to Debark, which is the headquarter town for the national park. We will stop here to get a permission to enter the park and meet the scout. We will have tea and coffee break and visit the local market if we have time. The local market is open every day, and every Wednesday and Saturday is the big market day. From Debark town, we will drive to the park gate, which is about 16km from the town. Then, we are heading about 6km to Buit Ras, the first area of the national park. From Buit Ras, we will trek for about 3, 4 hours to Chilkuwanit which is one of the most beautiful viewpoints. This area offers stunning views over the escarpment dropping vertically. You will most certainly encounter troops of the endemic Gelada Baboons and see them up-close. You may also see common jackal, klipspringer and more. There are a lot of birds such as Thick-billed Raven, Augar Buzard, Black Kites, Lammergeyer and different plant species such as Abyssinian Rose, Erica Arboria tree, Euphorbia Species, St. Johns Worttree(Hypercumrevoltum) and so on. Our car will pick you up at Chilkuwanit and drive to Gondar

3.00Due to the conflict in Amhara region, this tour as not possible in the natural park. And I understand that but I should have been informed in advance in order to be able to cancel the tour without penalty. They decided to make the tour in the beginning of the mountain range which is 20-30 km from Gondar. No park fees were needed. We were back at lunch time, which means the tour provided was not full day. Lunch was also not offered, I had to pay myself. This means that I paid a very high price for tour provided. after reporting the experience, I was provided with a partial refund, which I appreciate. So I recommend tourists to get informed about the security of the region and the feasibility of conducting the tour before booking.

5.00What a WONDERFUL experience it was! Booking on Viator was a breeze and after that I believe my tour was organized by Ethio Travel and Tour (ETT) via the agent Malese, but executed by Simien Eco Tours, who provided the AWD vehicle (Toyota Landcruiser), the excellent/super prudent driver and the tour guide Amare (hopefully that’s the correct spelling). From a punctual pick up at our hotel to the drive up to meet the guide (and the friendly scout) and the tour/hike itself on the mountain, everything was handled with care by the team. Amare (the guide) was very professional, caring, knowledgeable and took the whole experience to a higher level by providing an overall phenomenal service. We saw animals, hiked, had lunch across from this enormous waterfall and gained knowledge on the wildlife and other curiosities about the area and Ethiopia overall. 10/10 experience that we’ll never forget! Can’t recommend it enough!
