Al Shahaniya Racetrack
Professional camel racing began in Qatar in 1972, and the sport centers around the Al Shahaniya. Here, domestic and international tournaments take place every Friday, from October to February, with major events such as HH the Emir’s Main Race held in March and April. Remote-controlled, toddler-sized robot jockeys, clothed in colourful racing silks delight locals and tourists, as they ride the lanky mammals across the sandy track. Racing camels can run at speeds of up to 40 mph in short sprints and may continue at 30 mph for as long as an hour. The operator applies the whip antenna, commands the jockey to pull on the reins, and shouts encouragement to the camel via a built-in speaker. A visit to Al Shahaniya offers a unique opportunity to admire the best groomed and some of the most expensive camels in the world.
Discover the natural beauty of the desert and the arid wilderness at Zekreet. Dominated by unique mushroom-like limestone rock formations, the area has an otherworldly feel. One of Qatar’s most popular locations, the limestone formations appear as an umbrella of white chalk and offer a mountain of Instagram-friendly snaps. Strong winds blowing away softer sedimentary rock exposing harder limestone cliffs have created the jaw-dropping formations.

My Driver, Waleed, was excellent. He was punctual even at the 7 am hour, courteous, and a very good/careful Driver, especially on some of the difficult road stretches in the peninsula. And the vehicle was spacious, clean and well air-.conditioned. I got to see everything I wanted to and had as much time as I needed for photographs and just taking in the scenery.

Waleed is one of the best guides. He is funny and I had the best time learning about the West of Qatar. I got some really great pictures and loved the places we went. It was a fun experience and great tour.

We recently went on the West/North excursion that was truly a highlight of our trip to Doha. Our tour guide, Muhammad was exceptional. His knowledge of the area—everything from history and culture to local hidden gems—made each stop so much more meaningful. Muhamad also offered and took amazing photos of us. Would highly recommend this tour.

This was our second tour with Walleed from Desert Rose. Once again it was excellent and driving through the desert to Mushroom Rock and other rock formations was fantastic, it was nice to find a company who went into the desert without dune bashing. This tour needs to be promoted more. The camel racing centre was very interesting seeing hundreds of camels being exercised. We had a great time. Alan Learmonth
