Get off the beaten path and explore the lovely Istrian countryside on two wheels. Our e-bike tour will take you through Istria’s medieval hilltop villages, vineyards, olive groves, meadows and forests. The trip includes a break in Groznjan, also known as the town of artists. Take in the old stone houses and archways as you stroll through the cobbled streets.

You’ll also cycle part of the Parenzana, an old railroad bed now open only to cyclists and hikers. The trip is around 50km and features a mix of paved roads with little traffic and gravel bike trails.

What To Expect

Your guide will meet you at Roxanich Hotel in Motovun. After a providing a safety briefing, trip overview, and instructions on how to use the e-bikes, you'll set off with the guide toward the town of Oprtalj. We'll cycle up the biggest hill of our ride, but with the assistance of our e-bikes it shouldn't be strenuous. We'll take a break at the top to admire the stunning views of the valley below us. Next, we'll continue through the countryside, past small farms, fields and forests until we reach the town of Groznjan. We'll park the bikes and take about a 30-minute to one-hour break. Your guide will show you around the small town and tell you about its history. You'll have some free time to have a snack, a pizza, or a coffee or drink on your own. After the break, we'll continue our e-bike route and will enjoy the most scenic parts of the ride. We'll cycle on the Parenzana, a historic railroad bed now used by cyclists and hikers. Pedal through a series of tunnels and over stone bridges as you take in the breathtaking views of Istria's rolling green hills stretching into the distance. The loop route will take us back to the starting point just below Motovun.

We lucked out and it was only me and my husband on the tour so it was like our own private guide. Our guide Ozzie took us to many spots including an artists colony in the most picturesque setting with time for a lunch break. The ebikes worked perfectly. An awesome day!

We had an amazing experience on this ride. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and we had so much fun learning about Croatian history and culture from them! This was an incredible way to see and experience the hilltop cities. The e bikes made the ride enjoyable and low effort. The views we were able to appreciate were stunning. Zolan was professional yet personable. The sites were extraordinary! The towns and ride was super. I am in shape but did find it to be a good challenge despite the e-bike assist. I love a challenge but that should be considered.

This was such a great way to spend the day sightseeing a different part of Istria and the whole family (including 16 and 12 year old teenagers) really enjoyed it. The ebikes were excellent and in great condition, our guide Zoran was great sharing lots of info en route and taking photos for us which he shared afterwards and the stop of lunch at Grozjnan was lovely. If you want to do something different to going to the beach, I’d highly recommend this tour.

This was a truly unique expérience to see the back country of Istria. TJ was generous as a guide and full of ressources on the history of Croatia.
