As I am not very mobile, the description only refers to the streets of George IV Bridge and Lawnmarket, including the surrounding area. Quirky neighborhood with many restaurants and shops. During the peak season, it is supposed to be very, very crowded in Lawnmarket. There, one arrives at the famous castle. Entry is only allowed based on availability and prior purchase of the ticket. On May 21, 2026, there was only some availability during lunchtime. A visit to the neighborhood is a must in Edinburgh and worthwhile.

Great tour of old town! Very informed guide. Be aware that this is a free tour offered in Edinburgh and the fee paid through Viator is only a booking fee. Tour guide is not paid through Viator and tips are encouraged and expected.

Worthwhile way to spend 2 hours to hear lots of interesting fun facts about the Old Town. Our guide, Niamh Kinane, is an absolute legend. So talented at her job -- ask for her if possible!

I did Sandeman’s free Edinburgh walking tour which was a great way to get oriented in the city and learn about its history and culture. Our guide, Rory, is a local and has a PhD in History from the University of Edinburgh, so you’re getting a perfect mix of academic depth and genuine, lived-in perspective. Over about 2.5 hours, he brought the Old Town to life through its architecture, layers of religious history, and the cultural shifts that shaped what Edinburgh is today. We also walked along the charming Victoria street which was rumored to be the inspiration for Harry Potter's Diagon Alley. Rory was incredibly knowledgeable and kept the whole group engaged the entire time. If you’re visiting Edinburgh and love history, culture, and architecture, this tour is 100% worth your time.

Our guide, James, was entertaining, engaging, and erudite. We plodded around old town, following him like baby ducks. He regaled us with interesting histories and answered our curiosities. In two hours, we walked maybe two and a half miles, with many fascinating stops along the way. Basically, our guide is working for tips after the fees payed to the tour operators , and we happily filled his digital hat with coppers. Highly Recommended!

The tour was good and informative. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh for the first time. It began at 11am and took about 2 hours at a comfortable pace. G Davidson was our guide and did a very good job.
