Valley of the Fallen
Valley of the Fallen is a Francoist regime monument, Catholic basilica and a monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected at Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid. Franco claimed that the monument was meant to be a "national act of atonement" and reconciliation. The construction works mainly involved free workers and a smaller, albeit significant, percentage of prisoners, these between 1942 and 1950, under the regime of redemption of sentences.
Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial
San Lorenzo de El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Arriba is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain, located to the northwest of the region in the southeastern side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the foot of Mount Abantos and Las Machotas, 47 kilometres (29 mi) from Madrid. It is head of the same name judicial party. The settlement is popularly called El Escorial de Arriba, to differentiate it from the neighbouring village of El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Abajo. Felipe II ordered the construction of this Monastery in recognition of the victory of San Quintín, which took place on the day of San Lorenzo in 1557 and is from the King, to erect a mausoleum in memory of his parents and himself, placed under the invocation of Saint Lawrence.

A Must-see historical site of Spain. Don't miss it. Half day tour. Leaves plenty of time for other activity. Great price and value.

Maria was very thorough explaining all the details of the Escorial in both English and Spanish. When we went to El Valle de los Caidos, she did not hide the controversial history of how the place was built by Franco.

We were very excited about visiting the Escorial Monastery and the Valley of the Fallen. It was our last day of vacation, and we had it packed full of cool activities. Fun and Tickets was the company operating the tour. We are all divided into 3 groups, and we began to get concerned when the other groups had left and our bus was quite late. Eventually it showed up and after we started departing Madrid, we noticed all the other traffic passing us. We were on the bus 5 minutes, when the driver pulled the side of the interstate. The tour guide, an older lady, seemed quite befuddled. She had no idea what to do. We waited precariously in the tiny lane on the side of the road . The tour guide said we should take a siesta or play on our phones. Thirty minutes later, we had no problem solution. We had another another activity scheduled about an hour after the end of the this tour. But would there even be a tour? We spoke with the tour guide and she said it would be very long walk to walk back. We didn't see we had a choice. My family and I walked along the road back, far, but we were in decent shape. We looked behind us a few minutes into the walk and saw the Fun and Tickets bus still on the side of the road, so we know they were stuck there at least 40 minutes. We messaged Viator about a possible refund, since the tour company failed to deliver any tour to us in a safe and timely way. Now 4 days later, Fun and Tickets still has our money and doesn't consider us worthy of s response. Do not recommend, there is no guarantee with these guys. I am very unsatisfied, but a little wiser.
