The other day, Googling things to do in Manila, I came across a bicycle tour - on bamboo bicycles. Well, I had to, didn't I? so booked a package. The last couple of days, they've been emailing me to say they may cancel the tour because of the extreme weather. This morning, it was looking pretty bad but no cancellation email, arrived and by 1 – 2pm it had cleared up and was looking quite nice. On arrival, at the shop, I was told that the tour had been cancelled! I showed them the emails stating that they were evaluating the situation and mentioned the fact that I’d just taken a taxi to get there. Eventually, it was agreed that the tour would go ahead, with just me! How cool is that? Everyone else had cancelled because of the weather - but it turned out nice. Any rain would have been fine with me, anyway, as it’s around thirty and the humidity has been hard. The bike was cool. Well put together, light and rides very well. I have to have one, but they’re not cheap, despite being made out of bamboo. The one I saw, on their website, is priced at 2,399 USD. Turns out, you can buy just the frame, for around £550. S*** – that’s expensive too! Company has been operating a few years. Started up by an American who came up with the idea on his travels through Africa. Anyway, off me and my guide, Josh, went on the 2 and a half hour tour. Turned out, we stopped a lot and there were a lot of history lessons which I wasn’t really interested in, at first – I was really there for the bike experience, but actually turned out to be quite enlightening. I learnt a bit about Jose Rizal who is considered a national hero. He was executed by firing squad in 1896. Because he was considered a traitor, he couldn’t face the firing squad – he had to have his back turned. There were 8 Filipinos in the firing squad and 8 Spanish aiming at the Filipinos in case any missed. I was also told that only one of the Filipino rifles had a bullet in it. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. As we arrived back at the shop, it started to spatter rain slightly. Perfect timing. I will have to think about one of those bicycles and definitely go back for another tour in one of those bamboo sidecars. Their website is bambike.com if anyone is interested. Highly recommended, especially if you're into bikes.

Excellent for cycling and touring with a guide. The guide was very good in giving history lessons. The ride was slow paced and relatively on good roads, but would not recommend if you are not an intermediate or above cyclist. There was a treat at the end too.

Wonderful way to orient to Intramuros and Manila history! Loved the bamboo bikes. They were sturdy, light, & fun to ride. Great stops, beautiful sites, and fascinating history. Our guide, Prime, was engaging, knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. He took great photos for us! Cold towels & free delicious ice cream at the end were nice surprises. They offered sunscreen & bug repellent. Bring water. We did the 2.5 hour tour & will recommend it to friends. We look forward to renting their bikes in the future to ride around on our own now that we’re familiar with the area.

JD, our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable. The Bamboo bikes worked great and were fun to ride. Just like regular but lighter. It was a great way to quickly and easily get to the different sites around Entramoros on a hot day. Plus, ice cream at the end!

Awesome job, thank you, JD! Sightseeing on bikes is so much better. History, culture, language tips all from one amazing guide, JD, who helped us safely glide around Intramuros and learn heaps in a fun and informative way. Plenty of time for individual exploring, any question answered with humour and insight plus a free ice cream at the end. What’s not to love?!
