This is not a bus tour or a quick photo stop. It’s a real hike to Iceland’s most active eruption zone: Fagradalsfjall, where new lava flowed as recently as July 2025.
This experience takes you into one of Iceland’s newest volcanic regions, led by local guides who have followed the eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula since the first lava appeared in 2021.
Hike across wide lava fields, observe steaming ground and crater formations, and learn how repeated eruptions have transformed this part of southwest Iceland. The tour also includes visits beyond the volcano itself, giving you a deeper understanding of the area and its recent history.
Along the way, we stop in the evacuated fishing town of Grindavík and explore the surrounding sites.
✔️ Local guides with first-hand knowledge of the eruption area
✔️ Stops that show the wider volcanic landscape of Reykjanes
✔️ Small-group for the best possible experience
✔️ Relaxed pace so you can explore, ask questions, and enjoy the surroundings

What to Bring: Layered waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, water, snacks, gloves, phone/camera. Walking poles and crampons provided if needed.
Lava Visibility: Glowing lava only visible during active eruptions—never guaranteed. Tour adapts to any new accessible areas.
Extra Stops: Seltún and Kleifarvatn only included for tours returning to Reykjavík. Weather permitted.
Weather Impact: Hiking time and route may change due to weather for safety and comfort.

By booking this tour, you confirm that you have read and understood the full tour description. While the volcano area is publicly accessible, joining a guided tour is a personal choice made for added safety, local knowledge, and deeper context. In the case of an active eruption, the itinerary may be adjusted to prioritize access to the current eruption site and main viewing areas. Although we may follow the same trail used by others, this remains a fully guided experience.

It was a really great experience. The guide was really friendly and know a lot. We walked over old lava and he showed us how the temperatures on different places vary. All in all a really cool adventure, you have to go for once in your life.

Oddi was a fantastic guide and I learned so much on this hike! The hike itself was not too strenuous. We had a good amount of breaks and Oddi gave us plenty of time to take pictures and answered all of our questions. He told us many stories along the way which made the hike feel wholesome. He was very well prepared and kept our safety at the highest priority. This hike was the highlight of my whole week in Iceland and would definitely recommend doing this if you have the time in your schedule! It’s a once in a lifetime experience. Well worth the money and I wouldn’t change a thing! Thank you Oddi!

Haffi was a cool guide who helped us reach the lava fields and experience some Icelandic vibes. He is a local so he knows a lot about the volcano eruptions and all the story behind the lava fields. He showed us some cool things such as boiling eggs with LAVE FUMES. I would recommend 100%

If Mars had a hiking trail, I’m pretty sure it would look exactly like Fagradalsfjall Volcano. This hike was absolutely insane, in the best possible way. One minute you’re casually walking, the next you’re battling wind that feels personally offended by your existence. At some points I genuinely questioned my life choices… but then you look up, and boom, endless lava fields, steaming earth, and landscapes so surreal they don’t even look real. Totally worth it. Now, let’s talk about the real MVP, the guide. Honestly, the experience wouldn’t have been the same without him. Super knowledgeable, patient, and somehow managed to keep the group motivated even when the Icelandic wind was trying to send us back to the airport. He struck the perfect balance between being informative and actually fun to hike with, not one of those robotic “follow the flag” tours. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does, and it made a huge difference. He also kept a close eye on safety, pacing, and made sure everyone was comfortable, which really helped, especially on the tougher sections. Plus, the little insights and stories along the way made the whole experience feel more personal and memorable. Top tip: wear proper shoes, layer up like your life depends on it (because it might 😅), and don’t underestimate the wind. Also, bring a camera, you’ll want proof that you actually walked through what looks like the aftermath of a dragon fight. All in all, this isn’t just a hike, it’s an adventure. Slightly dramatic, mildly life-questioning, but 100% unforgettable. And with a guide like this, you’re in very good hands. ---
