Thinking of spending a calm sunset time in Komodo National Park ? Then you should visit Flying Fox Island (also called Kalong Island in local language), where you can see a spectacular show of dozens of thousand bats flying above your head just precisely moments before the sun goes down. It's a truly once-in-a-lifetime sighting.
Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in Labuan Bajo town and take you to the nearest village right in front of the island (around 30 minutes). Then you will get onboard a small local wooden boat to take you to the island (around 15 minutes). After the sun goes down, we will return to the village and drive you back to your hotel or any drop off point in Labuan Bajo. (around 45 minutes)
Therefore we could avoid spending a very long time on the sea when sky is totally dark and the wave often goes wild.

We were picked up from our hotel by Chandra who drove us to the port. He gave us useful information about the village. We transferred by makeshift raft to a wooden boat, and sat on the roof. The journey to the island took about 50 mins and as the sun set the bats emerged. There are thousands of them. Very interesting and picturesque. The reverse journey in the dark seemed quicker (and cooler, maybe take a sweater) and we again transferred to the raft. But the tide had gone out so we needed to walk the last few meters. Water only a few inches deep and ridiculously warm! The boat crew were helpful and Chandra a good host and guide. A nice evening.

Frisk: We went on a full day boat trip. At about 6 pm we headed over to the island the flying foxes flew from. They were flying to Labuan Bajo, the main island to look for food. We took many picture and saw an amazing sight. It was beautiful!

Pick up on time, comfortable transfer to the boat. Unexpected excitement of transferring to the boat by a large flit to avoid the dirty waters edge of the harbor area Beautiful location on the way, stunning scenery and 1000’s of bats taking to the skies Stunning Turtles surfacing to add to the enjoyment

DO NOT HESITATE!! I almost didn’t book because I was going solo and there were only 2 reviews (plus it’s a little privey) but I am SO glad I took this tour!!! Chan was my guide and he is SUPER nice and has good English so it was easy to communicate. I also felt very safe the whole time as a solo female. Chan happily told me about the area as we drove to the local port, which was beautiful and an experience on its own to see the local families with their goats. I felt like a queen getting onto the floating mat they use to transport from the dock to the boat (though do prepared to get your feet wet for a second). We climbed onto the roof of the boat where we sat for the whole ride. Sunset was gorgeous and then the bats came out by the THOUSANDS. It was so magical annd peaceful and we had a front-row seat as the timing for this tour got us there right before the other boats arrived. absolutely unforgettable experience that I will cherish forever. Yes the price is a little steep for Indonesia but I am so happy I did it…money comes back around but how many times am I going to be in the Komodo islands? Highly recommend

The tour was good. Flying bats was an experience and worth going. It was beautiful. The reason I am giving 3 stars is because this tour is not value for money at all. It’s way overly priced. The entire tour takes roughly about 3 hours to complete. For such a short duration of this tour I don’t understand why they have priced it so high. May be better off to book this directly with the hotel because we saw it’s half of what I paid here!!

Make sure to wear sandals and shorts. You will need to wade through a little bit of water and mud to get to the boat. The guide did offer my mother in law his sandals as she was wearing normal white ones shoes. The trip started with a nice drive through local communities and parked in a small marina village. We then climbed down some stairs out to the water and loaded up on a private small boat. We got to sit on the roof which was very soft and a comfortable carpet to sit on. We took about a 10min boat ride and got a front row view of the Flying Fox island. There were a lot of boats there to watch the bats, and our boat got a front row seat which was very nice. As we waited we were offered coffee or tea. During the wait we also got to see a few sea turtles come up for air which was an unexpected addition. After about 30min of waiting and enjoying the view, the bats slowly started emerging and for about 20min we got to sit as thousands of bats emerged from the island and covered the sky. It was an absolutely incredible sight to see up close. After it got dark we made our way back to the marina. Once back on land they had water to help rinse our feet of mud before driving back to town. The whole thing door to door took 3hrs. We are really happy to have taken this cruise. We didn't know what to expect, but it was wonderful.
